Gossip Girl meets Get Out in Ace of Spades, a YA contemporary thriller by debut author Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé about two students, Devon and Chiamaka, and their struggles against an anonymous bully.

"All you need to know is...I’m here to divide and conquer. Like all great tyrants do." (Aces)

When two Niveus Private Academy students, Devon Richards and Chiamaka Adebayo, are selected to be part of the elite school’s senior class prefects, it looks like their year is off to an amazing start. After all, not only does it look great on college applications, but it officially puts each of them in the running for valedictorian, too.

Shortly after the announcement is made, though, someone who goes by Aces begins using anonymous text messages to reveal secrets about the two of them that turn their lives upside down and threaten every aspect of their carefully planned futures.

As Aces shows no sign of stopping, what seemed like a sick prank quickly turns into a dangerous game, with all the cards stacked against them. Can Devon and Chiamaka stop Aces before things become incredibly deadly?

With heart-pounding suspense and relevant social commentary comes a high-octane thriller from debut author Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé.

Great book

OMG I CAN'T BEGIN TO EXPRESS HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS BOOK. First of all this is the perfect debut novel. This was a perfect way for this author to introduce themselves. From the moment I read the first sentence I was in love. The way the writing flowed making it super easy to read. Then came the mystery! The plot was engaging giving us the next reveal at the right time and each reveal being more spicy than the previous. I did enjoy everything but at the same time hated it. Seeing those kids suffering like that because of racism. It was so sick and twisted.

Uneven

I really wanted to like this, but it’s half baked. There’s good stuff but the entire narrative is dragged down by making Chiamaka one of the narrators. She’s not a character whose company you enjoy and her chapters DRAG. Devion is a much more fully developed and interesting character. His chapters and character arch are much more interesting. As a Black person who actually went to a mostly white private school… no Black person is this trusting. Chiamaka isn’t believable as a Black woman raised by Black parents. Maybe if she’d be that naive if she was adopted and raised by white people…

I Needed This

When I tell you I could not stop listening! I was first hooked when I discovered that there are two black protagonist, then to find out they are apart of the lgbtq community was a absolute plus. Like I just couldn’t wait for more to unfold. I kinda didn’t like that it took them so long to understand the situation, but I also understand why they were in denial for so long. Overall a great mystery and might buy a hard copy just to read and have in the future.

captivating story, 10/10 will recommend to friends in the future. Story was woven so well you don't see the next twist until it's too late.... or is it?

This was a wonderful story that highlighted major problems in today's society all while adding drama and plot twists. Warning: Check trigger warnings for this book before listening to it.

Amazing story

I loved this story so much, Chiamaka is a very relatable character for me as a bisexual young black girl living in a predominately white neighborhood and school but I also love the incorporation of the movie 'get out' that really showed towards the end and the entire gossip girl concept, I wish I could read it over and over again without knowing how it played out.
