Excellent journalism

Any additional comments?

Incredibly tragic story very sensitively handled by a fine journalist. There were no winners in this tale, and no real villains as there often are in true crime stories, only a terrible collision of personalities that crushes the lives of all involved in a moment of lost control. The people who lived this tale and the world they inhabit are brilliantly, heartbreakingly described. I hope the film, starring the wonderful Emilia Clarke, serves them as well.

Quickly became one of my favorite Audio books

Great story, good author and great talent for the audio. Hard to stop listening and it really felt like I could see everything happening. It takes a lot for me to give anything 5 stars but I did.

Less Would Have Been Way More

The most powerful aspects of this book lie in author Sharkey's vivid depiction of a man driven to despair by the crushing weight of his guilt. We've all been there at one time or another: when you have been convicted by your own conscience, there is no forgiveness to be had.

The second half of the narrative is compelling, but the first half is way too long. The prolonged examination of Susan Smith's clingy, needy character, and the endless descriptions of her peculiar hold on FBI Agent Mark Putnam and his wife Cathy become tedious. I can see why one reviewer abandoned the book after the 4th chapter.

Intriguing and fast moving

Fact written with a personal touch of who the people really were. You can't help ending the story without having sympathy for everyone involved.

Any additional comments?

Joe Sharkey's masterful writing shows how, in the words of S M Eisenstein, the most interesting question in the psychology of art is neither theme nor content, but how this theme or content becomes, from an "object" of reality_an object of art., how an 'event' becomes a 'work.'

Solid true crime

The story of senseless self-destruction and its reverberations. This one bummed me out, but it is a well told story.

Not A Bad Listen

As some true crime books go, they sometimes seem to get bogged down with almost too much back story. During my listen of this book, I thought the same thing. In fact, I quite listening to this book & started another because of that. However, during the last 2-3 chapters you become aware of why so much backstory is required. Everything gets tied in together & you end up quite liking the book! Stick with it, it's worth it.
