Publisher's summary

After his unspectacular professional baseball career ends with a knee injury in Toledo, Ohio, Johnny Earl gets busted for selling cocaine. After serving seven years in prison, all he wants to do is return to his hometown of Steubenville, retrieve the drug money he stashed before he went to jail, and start a new life where no one has ever heard of Johnny Earl.

However, before he can leave town with his money, Johnny is picked up for questioning in the murder of Rayce Daubner, the FBI informant who had set him up on drug charges in the first place. Then his former prison cellmate shows up - a white supremacist who wants the drug money to help fund an Aryan nation in the wilds of Idaho.

Five memorable characters, each with a separate agenda, come together in this layered tale of murder, deceit, and political intrigue.

Great read, loved it!

Having grown up in a small town in Mississippi, I can relate to many of the characters their relationships. Such a great storyline and various plot twist.
Well written & read from various characters perspectives.
Nicely done!

Anything by Robin Yocum is..

bound to be a great read. Well developed characters and story lines. No cringy politics. A little humor for balance makes Yocum's book an easy and delightful read. Just waiting for another book--hurry, hurry!

Not his best

But still a good story. Robert Yocum is a great author and if he reads his reviews, his fans are telling him leave out the explicit sex. I hope he tells whatever disgusting editor or publisher that convinced him sex sells, to go F* him-or-herself. Maybe it sells, but it won't make him a great writer. That's the only negative comment I have about this book. It would have been better without the pervy sex scenes.

Disappointed

I’ve enjoyed his other books but this book was not close to the others. Too much sex and no character s that that were interesting.

Disappointed in this Robin Yocum book

After listening to “The Essay” and “Favorite Sons” by R. Yocum, both had great story lines that developed the characters greatly, along with fantastic narrators, my husband and I wanted to listen to more of his books.
Download this and should have returned within the first 1/2 hr. To me, the narrator didn’t help the story at all in voicing the various characters-just terrible! But, more so, I was so disappointed in this story compared to the others. The constant graphic vulgar concentration on affairs and sex was over the top and totally unnecessary. I couldn’t get a grasp on liking any of the individuals and what they were doing. The story held no interest, unless you wanted to find out who the next affair with Dana Marie would be with, and wanted to listen to the graphic details of how she performed.
Going to return if possible. Now, I’m afraid to listen to the last two of Yocums books I have on my wish list. If they are in the order of The Essay, which I loved, I’ll be satisfied, but afraid to purchase in case I’m stuck with another one like this.
And, the narrator can enhance or ruin a book. This narrator was a big bust!
