Publisher's summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Jake Brigance is back! The hero of A Time to Kill, one of the most popular novels of our time, returns in a courtroom drama that The New York Times says is "riveting" and "suspenseful."

Clanton, Mississippi. 1990. Jake Brigance finds himself embroiled in a deeply divisive trial when the court appoints him attorney for Drew Gamble, a timid sixteen-year-old boy accused of murdering a local deputy. Many in Clanton want a swift trial and the death penalty, but Brigance digs in and discovers that there is more to the story than meets the eye. Jake’s fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career, his financial security, and the safety of his family on the line.

In what may be the most personal and accomplished legal thriller of John Grisham’s storied career, we deepen our acquaintance with the iconic Southern town of Clanton and the vivid cast of characters that so many listeners know and cherish. The result is a richly rewarding novel that is both timely and timeless, full of wit, drama, and—most of all—heart.

Bursting with all the courthouse scheming, small-town intrigue, and stunning plot twists that have become the hallmarks of the master of the legal thriller, A Time for Mercy is John Grisham’s most powerful courtroom drama yet.

There is a time to kill and a time for justice. Now comes A Time for Mercy.

Critic reviews

"Grisham has returned to the place closest to his heart... The trial is riveting...it's striking how suspenseful the story is...how much we're gripped by the small details."–Sarah Lyall, The New York Times

“Textbook Grisham—and that’s a compliment…a briskly paced legal drama, with just the right amount of suspense, conflict, plot twists, and courtroom theatrics.”—St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Ford County.

John Grisham has brought Clanton and Ford County to life. Not being from the south although I travel to that area, Mississippi in particular, I have come to appreciate the quirky nuances of this colorful world of sweet tea, fried foods and the sometimes troubled past that is the deep south. Mr Grisham is a gifted story teller and Michael Beck brings the characters alive. I can only hope that there's more Ford County stories forthcoming.

I enjoyed the story.

I was not so happy with the Andy Griffin/Goober voice of Jake. The other characters' voices were okay.

John! You have enough money to hire two narrators, a male, and a female.

Loved it!

A great book with a great reader! Love Grisham and Scott Brick! Amazing that such a novel -rich with storyline, character development and plot -can be so presented without using profanity or language that insults the readers’ intelligence. It makes one wonder why other authors find it necessary to do so. Listening to this book makes me eager for the next one!

Grisham

What can I say, it's a Grisham novel. The first book I read of a Grisham story was the first novel he wrote, but not the first he got published, titled "A Time to Kill." I was hooked. I've read every book he has published. If a Grisham novel was being released, it became the priority to get above anything else being published. This novel brings back the "old Grisham" that I cherished. It's another must read of a Grisham novel. Although it is somewhat predictable, he brings in well placed suprises augmenting the storyline.

Reliably Good

I always enjoy Grisham books, some more than others. This was a good listen - mostly thanks to the excellent narration - but oddly paced. The lead up to the trial was long and drawn out, the trial was very short and predictable, and then the lose end were tied up very fast. The secondary story about a lawsuit was concluded in a way I didn't understand.

Enjoyable

The book was worth the read for sure! The earlier reviews must be young and not realize that his books are dated almost 30ys ago in the heart of Mississippi! Different time and place but unfortunately the story still happens in 2020 sad!
