Publisher's summary

After eighteen years as a political prisoner in the Bastille, the ageing Doctor Manette is finally released and reunited with his daughter in England. There the lives of two very different men, Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat, and Sydney Carton, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer, become enmeshed through their love for Lucie Manette. From the tranquil roads of London, they are drawn against their will to the vengeful, bloodstained streets of Paris at the height of the Reign of Terror, and they soon fall under the lethal shadow of La Guillotine.

Terrible Narration

Difficult to listen to, ended up finding a different version. Narrator does very little to distinguish between different voices.

Permission required?!?

This recording begins by telling you it may not be stored on any electronic device without written permission from the publisher. Say, wha...???
The narrator has a North American accent and his upbeat “welcome to the show” intonation for the famous first line of this novel put me off completely. Just my personal preference.

A wonderful classic... ruined

Unfortunately, a super tale ruined by the narrator, the voice, the speed and the diction. Not at all the Dickensian classic that we’ve all come to know and love...
It’s was the worse of times......

Dire

Could not bear the narrator's voice which I found to be inconsistent in speed and generally rushed. Ruined a classic for me. Just my opinion.

American narrator

Fine if you're American, but too weird to listen to Dickens, so quintessentially British, with this accent.

Worst narrator ever

Awful narrator. He mispronounced so many words. Monsieur was turned into Mon-sewer which in a book full of French people made it painful to listen to. The voices he gave the characters were absolutely terrible. I couldn't finish the book.

Shame about the narration

Having read this many years ago, I thought I would revisit it via Audible. It was fairly hard going due mostly to the narrator. Why an American was selected to read a novel set in France and England is anyone's guess! The French accents were definitely Germanic and I had no idea what part of the UK inspired the English. The narrator seemed to be trying to get through as quickly as possible and missed the drama and nuance of the story, as well as mispronouncing words that are maybe unfamiliar to an American - Dolores rather than dolorous for example.
It has been good to refresh my mind as to the story but I will probably now re-read it as a kindle version at some point.
If you are considering the audio option, maybe check whether it is availability with another narrator?

Disappointing

After listening to 8 Dickens books previously on Audible and enjoying them, this one was a massive disappointment, the characters weren’t really developed and the storyline waffled on at times that it became very frustrating.
I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone as it would probably put them off Charles Dickens books forever.

Classic English story ruined by an American voice

An American voice immediately off putting as this is an English classic - off to find a version with an English or French reader (Sorry Mr Trant you are the victim of poor casting)

Sorry Mr Dickens.

The narrator was pathetic. An American monotone with little understanding of English pronunciation. I had relied on the narration in order to maintain focus throughout a long novel. Unfortunately, the lack of feeling in the reading had the opposite effect. As for the French accents...
