"A Star is Bored is an absolute knockout. Riotously funny and wickedly tender." (Taylor Jenkins Reid, New York Times best-selling author of Daisy Jones and the Six)

People Magazine Best Book of Summer 2020 - Named a Must-Read Summer book by Town & Country - Named One of the 14 Best Books of Summer 2020 by Harper's Bazaar - One of Library Journal's 2020 "Titles to Watch" - One of the 30 Best Beach Reads According to Parade Magazine

The Devil Wears Prada meets Postcards from the Edge in a hilariously heartfelt novel influenced in part by the author’s time assisting Carrie Fisher.

Charlie Besson is tense and sweating as he prepares for an insane job interview. His car is idling, like his life, outside the Hollywood mansion of Kathi Kannon. The Kathi Kannon, star of stage and screen and People Magazine’s worst dressed list. She needs an assistant. He needs a hero.

Kathi is an icon, best-selling author, and an award winning actress, most known for her role as Priestess Talara in a blockbuster sci-fi film. She’s also known in another role: crazy. Admittedly so. Famously so. Fabulously so, as Charlie quickly discovers.

Their three-year odyssey is filled with late-night shopping sprees, last-minute trips to see the aurora borealis, and an initiation to that most sacred of Hollywood tribes: the personal assistant. But Kathi becomes much more than a boss, and as their friendship grows, Charlie must make a choice. Will he always be on the sidelines of life, assisting the great forces that be, or can he step into his own leading role?

Laugh-out-loud funny and searingly poignant, Byron Lane's A Star Is Bored is a novel that, like the star at its center, is enchanting and joyous, heartbreaking, and hopeful.

Byron Lane has created a silly, odd, glorious and beautiful piece of art we are all lucky enough to get to share in. I laughed out loud. I sobbed. I reflected. And I feel like I got to share in something very special, even if it is a fiction. Such a gift.

A magical world

This book does not disappoint. It is both what I expected and so much more. The amazing insider perspective on the strange, hilarious and often heartbreaking aspects of living in LA. The delightful surprise was how personal and raw the book was. It’s not clear how much is real or fictionalized but it doesn’t matter. Byron writes with such honesty about his fears, insecurities, joys and revelations that it all rings true as beautifully read Noah Gavin. Bravo!

Hilarious, Poignant and Pitch Perfect!

Great book, I loved her writing, first book of hers I read was “Delusions of Grandma” about 30 years ago and I was hooked. I then saw her as a writer instead of an actress. One of my pet peeves is she did abridged audiobooks. Thank for the insight. Tone of book felt a cross between Carrie and David Sedaris. I loved it, thank you

Hard to listen to knowing how it ended in real life

I started off liking this book. Enjoyed getting to know the characters. But then it about 1/2 way through I started to get a bit bored - and then I bumped up the listening speed a notch. Kept listening and for the last 1/3 I was listening at 1.5 speed. I wanted to find out what happened to Charlie, Kathy and Miss Gracie but it was just a bit tedious getting to the end. I guess I lost my patience with Kathy and Charlie's lack of self esteem. I understand it, just didn't keep my sympathies enough to keep me totally engaged in the story.
Plus, the narrator Noah Galvin did an okay job but OMG, learn to swallow! I don't understand why some narrators can not perform without sounding like they have a mouth full of spit. I know it can be done as many do but he was def not one who can read, take a breath & swallow. Sounds petty I guess but one of my pet peeves with audio books.

Reader kinda bored
