Publisher's summary

London, 1935. Ruby is always hungry, but she will go without if it means her young brothers can eat. 1930s Bermondsey might be called the larder of London, with its pie, pickle and jam factories, but for the poor working classes, starvation is often only a heartbeat away.

When Ruby's neighbour suggests she ought to go to the Methodist Mission for free food, Ruby knows her father will be furious, but she has no other option. It is a decision that will change the course of her life forever, split her family and in the end lead her to face a terrible choice between duty and a great love.

A heartfelt saga from the best-selling author of Custard Tarts and Broken Hearts.

Pretty good listen.

Different than I expected… Good story line and characters but kind of dragged on in certain plots.

poignant struggle between light and darkness

This novel kept my attention all the way through. I enjoyed the characterisation, with all the characters trying to make a better world in their own way. I felt sorry for Charles, who had head knowledge of the Bible but didn't have Jesus in his heart. I felt for Eric, who had to grow up too quickly and made choices that he mistakenly thought would lead to a better life. I felt for Dodge, who was too weak and immature to do the right things by his wife and children. Ruby's own struggle with her faith shone through after her split with Charles, but her ability to show forgiveness to her father helped me believe that God was still working in her life, as did her strength in insisting the hospital staff change the treatment, which happily in the end brought about nothing short of a miracle! The book was read well and this added to my enjoyment.

A sister's struggle

I have now read all the books by Mary Gibson.
They are truly the most heart warming books.
They need to be read in order of publication.
I have laughed and cried in every one.
The girls, who are the predominant characters in all the books are inspiring people who overcome circumstances that in this day and age are impossible to imagine.
The narration is perfect and brings the books to life.
I recommend all the books and wish I were starting then all again!

Unusual storyline

I love Mary Gibson's tales of Bermondsey and find the social history of the day to day struggles being brought to life really gripping and interesting. Although I enjoyed the story, this one is my least favourite. the tales of the "Black shirts" and every day factory workers worked really well, I just found the constant biblical references a bit much. I understand the need to portray Ruby as a true Methodist believer but at times it got a bit tedious. The rest of the characters were really well thought out though and I'm looking forward to the next book.
