Addictive

No human has ever left the Shade alive. Now, after weeks of captivity on the sunless vampire island, Sofia is given the choice: stay, and remain with her beloved Derek Novak as his human slave; or return to her life with Ben and have some chance of normality. Can she live with the choice she must make?

Book 2 continues the series exactly where book 1 left off. If there’s one thing that jars me a little when reading this series, it’s that there are no clearly defined beginnings and endings to each of the novels. Each book seems far too short and ends abruptly, leaving you hanging, wondering what is next. Sheer genius of Bella Forrest, I think. I know that as readers, we like tidy little packages with all the ends neatly ribboned off, but when you’re reading a series, there has to be a reason to move on to the next book, and Bella Forrest certainly knows how to provide that. So, I’ve made peace with this series by viewing it as one long book that has been broken down into smaller chunks. And it’s one of those fast-paced series you have to read from cover to cover!

Book two featured a greater variety of character’s POV. I particularly enjoyed this, since it gave depth to many of the characters that I felt was missing in book 1. Strangely enough, I relished Lukas’ POV, it was just fresh and unusual to see things from the POV of the villain.

The emotional intensity from the first book was heightened in this one. I felt that Derek’s ‘fall’ following Sofia’s decision made him more ‘human’ and ‘inhuman’ at the same time. The chemistry and intensity between Sofia and Derek remained intact and there was some lovely character development all round, including for Ben.

This is definitely an addictive series.

Good follow up

This is definitely a YA series however I am definitely hooked. The deep and emotional connection between the strong and confident Sofia and the brooding, dark, vampire Derek is intense and I love it. This audio was twice as long as the first and twice as good. The narrators once again did a fabulous job. The author really took you into the depth of emotions that the characters have developed and allowed them to make decisions I didn’t see coming. Those decisions lead to longing and heartache and have made me purchase Audio number three.

Better than the first

This book was much better than the first! Book one intrigued me enough to keep me reading, but this one brought out so much more of the story line. We learn about the history of the Shade, get a glimpse into Vivian and Derrik's pasts, we see beyond the beautiful penthouses and into the caves.

Did I mention a MASSIVE cliff hanger...?
Yes, the book is good, but the ending is mind blowing. No way can you finish this one and not immediately start book three!!

I'm fully invested in this series now. It's still a bit too young adult for my liking but the story is interesting enough that I just don't care. I can't wait to see how things play out in the future. There are so many wild cards. Ben, Lucas, the Hunters, the other Vampire Coven's... at some point they've all got to meet in the middle, and what will become of Derrik and Sofia then?

Never ending surprises

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. This series so far, and I'm on book 4 has constantly kept me surprised. It's literally impossible to predict how the any of the ongoing stories will end.

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Shade of Blood?

Finding who out who Ingrid is...

What aspect of the narrators’s performance would you have changed?

The narrator for Ben. He was pretty awful, unless he's planning on being the next James T. Kirk from the Starship Enterprise. Unfortunately his portrayal of Ben ruined the ability to bond and like the character I believe I would have like his character a lot more had it been done by a seasoned narrator.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

I think the title of a film should be the same as the book.

Any additional comments?

They say this is for young adults. Maybe for the romance part (sexual aspects), but the truth is, this has more twist and turns than most of the Adults book I have listened too this year. That's saying a lot since I have listened to over 40 books so far for 2014.

I agree, it good for Twilight fans

Definitely caught my attention. At first I was comparing it too much to Twilight and thought it was just a copycat but it's got it's differences and I'm hooked! Can't wait to read the rest of the series!

I don't like the voices of Ben (too breathy, especially for a teenager!!) and Lucas reads with a lot of unnecessary pauses. Annoying. Derek sounds handsome as ever.

Female narrator not that good

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Better female narrator

Would you be willing to try another book from Bella Forrest? Why or why not?

Yes - story was okay

What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?

Overall voice - too hard to listen to for a long period of time

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from A Shade of Blood?

More interaction between the characters and less emotional thoughts of each

Good narration, slow story

I like the voices of the narrators, they do a great job capturing the feelings of the characters.
However, I feel like nothing happened in the story. It dragged. The revelation at the epilogue was the most interesting thing to happen.

A guilty pleasure

This second installment is much better than the first book/novella. It’s a longer story which gave the author more time for backstories and world building. I don’t know what it is about this series but I am truly enjoying it. I’ve been growing tired of the vampire genre lately but this one is too entertaining to ignore. It’s a guilty pleasure for sure.

No threat to Twilight or Anne Rice books

I loved Anne Rice and her books, I read Twilight because of the hype, not as good but the vampire story from a different angle...This book is badly written, juvenile, wrong choice of narrator and aimed at the 12 - 14 years. I persisted with it to the second book, so bad, I cant even finish it, returning it . Don't waste your time...

Angsty, Predictable and Everything I Could Possibly Want!!

I really love these books. They are what they are and give me exactly what I’m looking for in a supernatural romance. I read these when I need a book to give me a simple story with instant gratification. Its a recipe I love and keep come back to time and time again.

I was a little sceptical about the audio but when I saw Zachary Webber was I was instantly sold. I love that mans voice! Others are a bit hit and miss but you get used to it.

Amazing

One of the top Audible Audiobooks I have listen to. I love 'The Shade of Vampire' to begin with, but listening to them brings them to life. The narrators to the book justice and why really make you feel like your live the life of Sofia, Derek and Ben.
My favourite part of this audiobook was when Sofia Claremont returns to The Shade to find Derek taking revenge on Ashley because his beloved twin sister had been captured by the hunters.
My Favourite character was Sofia, narrated by "EMMA GALVIN".
Yes, I couldn't stop listening to it. I Loved it and stop listening.

Awful! Emma Galvin's narration ruined this book!

Would you try another book written by Bella Forrest or narrated by the narrators?

There's nothing wrong with the writing but I just can't stand to listen to Emma Galvin's annoying voice anymore! I've tried to get into this 2nd book but her voice is so bad that I can't seem to even pay attention to what's happening anymore.

What could Bella Forrest have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Get rid of Emma Galvin. Re-Record the first few books without Emma. Keep everyone else but please never hire E.G ever again!

How could the performance have been better?

Hire someone that is believable and not as annoying as Emma Galvin.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The other narrators are perfect I could always listen to them and Zachary Webber is perfection.

Compelling

A shade of blood is intense and compelling, i love Derek and Sofia's love story, the only complaint i have is how Sofia can kiss ben and proclaimed that she loves Derek but she left him, she is a bit annoying in her insecurities and skepticism towards Derek love for her.....
