After the war, he became an educator, preserving the memories of the Confederate soldier and serving as Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans for decades. In 1947, he gave the following recording about his wartime experiences. He died a year later at the age of 102.

What a true patriot sounds like!
General Patton was the real deal. He understood fidelity to the constitution and what it meant to protect the homeland. This man was a principled warrior. I don’t think bone spurs would been a factor in not serving his country and I think he would decimate any man who called our war dead suckers .
