Publisher's summary

Lady Emily Hardcastle is an eccentric widow with a secret past. Florence Armstrong, her maid and confidante, is an expert in martial arts. The year is 1908 and they’ve just moved from London to the country, hoping for a quiet life.

But it is not long before Lady Hardcastle is forced out of her self-imposed retirement. There’s a dead body in the woods, and the police are on the wrong scent. Lady Hardcastle makes some enquiries of her own, and it seems she knows a surprising amount about crime investigation...

As Lady Hardcastle and Flo delve deeper into rural rivalries and resentment, they uncover a web of intrigue that extends far beyond the village. With almost no one free from suspicion, they can be certain of only one fact: there is no such thing as a quiet life in the country.

It's not you, it's me!

As per usual, my pathetic inability to keep track of who is who has completely “ruined” another reading experience. I suck. I just finished the book, yet have no idea whodunit and who they dunnit to!

I enjoyed the 2 main characters and the setting, and I really appreciated the frequent exposition that reminded me of what was going on, but alas I was lost early on since there were too many people – I am hopeless.

On the bright side, this means that I can re-read this book one day and it will feel like a new story!

Despite my shortcomings, I can still tell that this is a series I would probably enjoy so I am up for trying Book 2 sometime.

Great characters, great story

You can't help but love the two main characters of this novel. Their senses of humor and rejection of the class distinctions make their relationship a one-of-a-kind for the beginning of the 20th century. The story itself is fast moving and intriguing. The narration is wonderful. I look forward to purchasing the next book in the series.

after listening to several thrillers I was delighted to find this series. Lovely country tale and great characters.

One of my favorite authors.

I’m re listening to the series. I love this author and the narrator.

The stories are clean and interestingly unique.

a jolly good story

characters are very well developed. my cat listens to audiobooks with me at night and he really adores the voice of the narrator. the nights that I did not listen to this before bed he would actually tap my tablet indicating to me he wanted to listen to The Voice. but enough about my cat liking audiobooks. the story found me guessing who done it dot-dot. But I was wrong right up until the end. if you want an inexpensive read that has audio for the hours that you want to listen instead this is a great book for both

Needed a little more depth but enjoyed it

The story dragged a little in the beginning and at various parts but it eventually solidified into an enjoyable story. Since this is the first of the series, a lot of background information and developing of relationships must be made but it did lack a bit of depth to the plot. I’m not into British society hierarchy, but I do love the British mysteries like Midsommer Murder, Miss Marple, and Father Brown TV series. I am hoping that the second book has more depth and plan to buy it next. I also like the relationships of Lady Hardcastle, Flo Armstrong, and the Inspector are developing.

A nice read for a rainy afternoon

There are some books that "WOW!" us, carry us along into a heart thumping climax.
That is decidedly not the Lady Hardcastle series... it is easy, pleasant, cozy and a lovely distraction
on a rainy day. Which is just fine to me.. I plan on continuing with this series, as it is a good palate
cleanser after a barn-burner of the thriller... something to remind me the world can be a nice place.

fun listen

The narrator was delightful. There were a few times I had difficultly in discerning the various voices, but for the most part she did well. I listened to this book when I was down with a bad case of flu. The story was able to hold my interest without being so complicated that my fever clouded mind couldn't keep up. It is a simple , fun story that just feels good.
