Cinematic Noir

Was fun to get back to the B. Gunther series. Fun may not be the right word as there are many horrible events on display here, but having visited Argentina in recent years, I found the locations and descriptions very cinematic. The earlier era Germany flashback chapters were also a good anchoring for the character's past. One of the best in the series for me, once I got used to the rhythm of hardboiled similes (maybe overdone in this one) from the opening pages. I wonder if at some point someone will get the rights to make a film series of some of the novels. This particular one would make a great noir thriller.

Kerr is the master of pre-war and war time Germany. His knowldege of Berlin is phenomonal.

What did you love best about A Quiet Flame?

Philip Kerr just knows how to tell a story. Interesting characters, interesting plot, interesting ending.

Long story.

This is a long one. Interesting because of the post war Argentine / German nazi angle but very labyrinthine and complex. Requires one to stick with it.

Not His Best but Still Worth It

The writing here is okay but not as good as usual. Hecht is still fine as the narrator. Even Kerr's not-so-good stories are still worth reading/listening to. In this episode it just seems that Bernie is making too many mistakes for the convenience of Kerr so he can make rather obvious political statements. It is more fun when Kerr is simply telling a story and letting Bernie smart-off and get into feasible trouble. In A Quiet Flame Bernie's arrests are far too contrived to enable the listener to feel a smooth flow of the plot. The wise-cracks are still there and the story is passable, even given the several bumps along the road.

The Bernie Gunther books are astoundingly good and I look for books narrated by Paul Hecht. One of the best narrators ever.

Bernie's expertise as a detective and underlying decency takes us on an exciting journey through the murky and grubby side of Peronist Argentina. The irony of Juan Peron is that having saved these Nazis, he then robbed them.

Great book. But I wish John Lee was still the narrator !!

Good book gone bad.

i just fiinished the previous book in the series and had to immediately down load the next one. I read some of the reviews before doing so. I ignored the reviews of the narrator shift. I shouldn't have. The change is quite jarring. You wouldn't think so but it is. it is almost a difference series. i can't believe the the producers went with Mr Hect midstream in the series. it changes the entiee tone of the book and ruins the reader or listener"s relationship with the character. it is like having Danny Devito play James Bond. This is the last download that i will do in the series. i will probably just follow up with the series at a used book store or the library. The book i am sure is good but the new narrator killed it for me.

Bernie in Argentina

You can't but like Bernie Gunther.

In this book, due to circumstances Bernie finds himself in 1950 Argentina. He is immediately sucked up by the Argentine powers to once again be a detective looking into grisly circumstances that he doesn't really want to but has to. He must go into the German community there to solve a mystery, in the middle of ex SS soldiers who are living in Argentina to escape the crimes they committed in World War II.

A great setting for the next book in the series.

May be his best

I haven't finished the series, but this one may be the best of the bunch. Standing alone it deserves five stars across the board. Narration by Paul Hecht is, to my ear, his best effort to date. Flash backs are clear easy to follow and directly relevant to the point of departure. I wish more authors understood their proper use. One hardly need suspend disbelief to engage with this book. Enjoy! It's a great read.
