Returning to Lilian Beckwith
Lilian Bethwith was a favourite of mine in the 90s, and seeing some new titles on Audible I had not recognised having read before, I clicked to listen. The Proper Woman and Small Party were so beautifully and skilfully read and characterized by Hannah Gordon.
Lilian Beckwith's writing was a surprise, and quite different to the tales of the island life of the previous books. A skilful author - uplifting, yet emotionally cruel and beautiful at the same time. Highly recommended.

Fabulous Scots historical (1930s 40s) fiction
A really enjoyable book about a life in the remote islands of Scotland where life can be very hard and people uncompromising in their beliefs and customs and paticularly for women. The main story is about endurance in an abusive relationship ... then ends very differently. 😉 HIGHLY recommend.
