Emma Lathen is called the American Agatha Christie and Nero Wolfe Without Portfolio by New York Times and Wall Street Journal reviewers. Set in the land of the old rich in Northern Connecticut juxtaposed with working people is this witty and insightful conflict between the two groups. Book number two in her John Putnam Thatcher series.

John Putnam Thatcher was a favorite series detective character of mine, but unfortunately the reader makes this audio version pretty much unbearable. I suggest listening to a minute of the audio before purchasing to gauge your tolerance for a monotone rendition with gasps and snorts and odd stops and starts.

Unfortunate reader

The worst reader I have encountered after listening to over two thousand audiobooks. The pauses in the middle of a word, and the myriad mispronunciations of words and common names made it very difficult to persevere to the end.

Poor reader ruins a good story.
