Publisher's Summary

Amber Marie Sterlington, the rage of the season in Regency-era London, has her pick of men, and she knows what she wants most in a husband: a title and a fortune. Why would she ever marry for something as fickle as love? And why would she ever look twice at Thomas Richards, a third son of a country lord?

But when Amber's social standing is threatened, the character of her future husband becomes far more important than his position. After a public humiliation, she find herself exiled to Yorkshire - alone except for her maid, Amber, and faced with a future she never expected in a circumstance far below what she has known all her life. Humbled and lonely, Amber begins to wonder if isolation is for the best. Who could ever love her now?

Even better the second time

I read this when it first came out and loved it then. This audio version is very good and enjoyed the story even more. This is the kind of story that makes you feel better for having read it.

Life without beauty

This was an interesting book with a lot of caricature development. Can you find happiness without the "normal" beauty the world expects you to have? Sometimes the hardest things we go through in life; the things that feel like they will break you in a way that you will never be whole again, are the things that help us to become stronger, wiser, and kinder then we ever dreamed posable. This was an inspiring book.

Very Enjoyable!

I appreciate Josi's perspective on what true love is, the variety of ways people handle challenges, & maintaining your sense of self esteem while handling the criticism of others. :)

In general the narrator was good....

The story was interesting with well written characters, and I did like the moral of the story- acceptance of oneself and if others - but I was so irritated with the narrator's very un-British pronunciation of some words such as Pri (eye)-vacy (American pronunciation) instead of privacy (the first three letters sounding like the pre in pretty)- correct British pronunciation. I could NOT believe that the producers of this audio book let the narrator get away with such bad pronunciation! In a book that takes place in Britain, with British speaking characters, you cannot have them speaking with American pronunciation! That really bothered me! Other than that big flaw, I did like the development of the main character, Amber, from a completely unfeeling snob to a humble, grateful, person who, when changed, still did not know her worth. I also liked her maid, Suzanne, who stood up for herself from the first meeting with Amber, and then as Amber became more humble, supported her and became her true, very loyal friend. Overall it was a very decent book.
