Publisher's summary

When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes.

Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Sûreté du Québec to places even he is afraid to go. But must.

And there he finds four young cadets in the Sûreté academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map.

Everywhere Gamache turns, he sees Amelia Choquet, one of the cadets. Tattooed and pierced. Guarded and angry. Amelia is more likely to be found on the other side of a police line-up. And yet she is in the academy. A protégée of the murdered professor.

The focus of the investigation soon turns to Gamache himself and his mysterious relationship with Amelia, and his possible involvement in the crime. The frantic search for answers takes the investigators back to Three Pines and a stained glass window with its own horrific secrets.

For both Amelia Choquet and Armand Gamache, the time has come for a great reckoning.

Critic reviews

“If you haven't listened to this series, start at once. You'll love your stay in Three Pines.”--AudioFile, Earphones Awards Winner

"This book engages the listener immediately and might be Penny’s best one yet...The narration is dramatic and voiced. [Robert] Bathurst has clearly found a comfort level with the characters that is obvious from the many different voices he utilizes to reflect each one’s idiosyncrasies. Reading at a good pace and tempo, the complex story unfolds and eventually all the mysteries are resolved, including one that is revealed in the very last pages. Fans of the series will gobble this up and relish every moment." SoundCommentary.com

"Bathurst is nothing short of perfect, managing the French-Canadian accents deliciously." - St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Another great story by Louise Penny

This story grabbed me near the beginning and wouldn't let me go. As always the characters were fascinating and different. Louise Penny creates characters you want to get to know. And she includes all the characters loyal readers have come to love.
The plot was great and there were lots of twists and turns to keep it interesting. And her plots always bring hope.
I highly recommend this novel.

Sure Hope More Gamache is coming.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I normally listen in the car. With The Great Reckoning I listened while cooking, cleaning, napping and walking the dog. It was an all around good story.

Any additional comments?

The Great Reckoning seemed to answer a lot of questions and tie up loose ends. I sure hope there is more Gamache in our future. I don't think he is done yet.

Each Louise Penny novel is unique and surprising. My only fear is that she will stop writing them.

Another great story of good versus evil, hate versus love

Louise Penny is such a marvelous storyteller. I keep wondering if I will somehow grow weary of these characters I have come to know so well, but she still manages to make me laugh out loud and shed a tear or two. Their vitality is palpable and enduring, and I'm so delighted to know there must be more to tell.

Real and believable story.

Any additional comments?

It took awhile to get used to how the author referenced her characters. At times they were referred to by first name or last name only and at times by their full names. While puzzling I began to enjoy how it enlarged and personalized each character. Well done.

Another Winner for Louise Penny

Three Pines is where I want to live. The characters are wonderfully simple and at the same time so complex and insightful. Louise Penny never disapoints, her stories keep you guessing. If you read one you will be hooked and want to read them all. Mr. Bathurst narration is always an easy listen.
