Publisher's summary

Dead prostitutes can seem like part of the landscape in South Los Angeles.

What, then, could render two veteran homicide detectives speechless as they stand over their latest victim?

Tightly-wound Dickie Jones and his smart and cocky partner, Matt “Pretty Boy Floyd” Tyler, find themselves entangled with gang members and a sexy drug dealer as they uncover a nefarious plot rife with greed, sex, and betrayal.

Can law enforcement’s “odd couple” survive fights, shoot-outs, and a sniper who wants them dead? What about their wives, and their captain, all of whom have had it with them both?

A Good Bunch of Men will have you laughing, gasping, and craving the next in the Dickie Floyd Detective series.

one and done

this series is not for me. if you want to listen to a book that uses the n-word 100+ times. totally not necessary. author is a retired detective. doesn't help their "we aren't racist" narrative

True Insight into a Homicide Investigator’s life

If you are tired of watching those overly pious, soft spoken, too serious, bleeding heart TV and Movie Homicide Cops and want a front seat view into the life of a real Homicide Investigator, this is the book for you. Danny Smith had the ***** to write the true story of a dedicated Homicide Investigator and the ongoing banter between two headstrong partners. I hope they make this into a movie!

A good bunch of entertainment

Good fun. Author rolled out insights of a good homicide detective, with all the twists and turns. I'm moving on to his next book. The reader was okay, but uneven and voice did not match my image of what a couple of detectives would sound like in their banter. Author deserved better.

The real deal!

For those who like their detectives going to wine tasting events while not investigating their cases, this is not the book for you. This book is written by a big city cop who writes a book like what it is really like to work homicide in a big city department (in this instance the LA Co. Sheriff's Dept - the third largest metro police agency in the country). I spent over 35 years in a big city department and I could relate to the entire feel of the book - which is about two homicide dicks investigating the murder of an inner-city hooker. The case has plenty of twists and turns and along the way these two dicks - one sometimes lovingly refers to his partner as "Dick Head" - banter and rely on each other only as two seasoned, long-time partners could. You'll find this book full of black, cop-like humor that made me lol as they not only handled this case but several additional cases they kept "catching" as they were trying to solve the hooker homicide (as I say, this is how real police work is - homicide dicks don't work just one case at a time). Throw in the usual bureaucratic BS that sometimes gets in a detective's way and you've got the full enchilada (a nod to LA). This book is the real deal.

It was alright

I kinda struggled to finish it. I would loose interest in it kind of fast. Had to listen to it in small doses.

don't hesitate to purchase this one!

I'm an avid reader and listener always looking for a good detective mystery. I so enjoyed this book. I heard about the author and book oa true crime podcast and bought it right away. the fact that it is written by a real-life detective lends validity to all aspects of the narrative. I hope another is in the works.

Well Worth a Listen

The plot was good but the banter between these 2 cops made this book hilariously great. You'll find yourself laughing out loud as they give each other shit. I wish I could say I liked his other book as well as this one, but that's just not the case.

An entertaining book with some genuine puzzles to

An interesting if somewhat lighthearted book with some genuine puzzles to solve and made more entertaining by the ongoing sarcasm and satirical banter between the two main characters. I thought it may have ended a bit abruptly but I will try another in this series to see if it improves because I believe the potential is there.

No way.

For the first time I was unable to listen to all of this book. Boring.
