A stranger comes to town, lodging high in a dilapidated old building in New York. As he prepares for sleep, eerie sights and sounds build slowly and lead to the appearance of an enormous, sorrowful ghost.

I had a good deal of difficulty understanding the purpose of this short story. Maybe, it is just me or when I am listening to it. It is, however, difficult to criticize Mark Twain. I am a fan.

Perhaps this is a political story, since it references Albany, NY, but it might be that the story is too anchored in Twain’s time and, so, I am unable to relate.

The narrator did a fine job, though I felt it was rushed. I feel some pauses between sentences might have made it better. It almost feels like AI.

(Note to Audible: if you employ the use of AI narrators in the future, I will have to reconsider my subscription. A word to the wise is sufficient.)

As much as I like Mark Twain, I cannot recommend this audio presentation.
