Publisher's summary

John Gierach is known for his witty, trenchant observations about fly-fishing. In A Fly Rod of Your Own, Gierach once again takes us into his world and scrutinizes the art of fly-fishing. He travels to remote fishing locations where the airport is not much bigger than a garage and a flight might be held up because a passenger is running late. He sings the praises of the skilled pilots who fly to remote fishing lodges in tricky locations and bad weather. He explains why even the most veteran fisherman seems to muff his cast whenever he's being filmed or photographed. He describes the all-but-impassable roads that fishermen always seem to encounter at the best fishing spots and why fishermen discuss four-wheel drive vehicles almost as passionately and frequently as they discuss fly rods and flies. And while he's on that subject, he explains why even the most conscientious fisherman always seems to accumulate more rods and flies than he could ever need.

From Alaska to the Rockies and across the continent to Maine and the Canadian Maritimes, A Fly Rod of Your Own is an ode to those who fish.

Critic reviews

"A must for fisherman and outdoor enthusiasts, this book may also have wider appeal, as it is as much about travel, friendships, and navigating today's world as it is about fly-fishing." ( Library Journal)

Narrator

Robotic narrator ruins the listen w lurchy and robotic delivery. Def not the voice of a guy that fishes. Why doesn’t JG read it himself...

Poor Narration

Mike Chamberlain should do silent films or become a mime. If you want to enjoy this book read it.

You don't learn much and it's not that great

You don't learn much and it's not that great of a story. you do get somebody that talks about the guilt of flying into pristine Alaskan Waters, but it's okay if you feel bad about it as long as you pointed out to everybody. He even ends with something about deep frying fish and enjoying the guilty empty calories. Make up your mind. He's trying to hard to play both ends throughout the book. It's like hey guys I do all these hick things but I'm pretty smart too. I'm being generous with my rating, but this is just an average book.

Classic Gierach

Some new ones, all inspiring to me as a beginner fky fisherman and now “as long as I”m able” as JG shares.

great book, flat delivery

the narrator has the matter-of-fact tone which usually works great for audio books, but here it misses the writer's wry sarcasm.

Worst Narrator

Couldn't finish, the narrator was so monotone and unemotional it ruined the entire experience.

Enjoyable.

Probably not worth a non-fisher listening to this, but on the other hand, it might inspire an interest in trying fishing.
While this is about fishing in North America and mainly Alaska I live and fish in North East England. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this and hopefully one day I’ll be able to organise (and afford) a salmon fishing trip to Alaska.

Great book let down by the 'nasal' narrator.

This is another triumph by Gierach as far as I'm concerned. He's a grumpy old fart but still manages to make me smile with his humour and wry look at life and the world of fly-fishing. Cheers John!

Gone fishing!

Absolutely loved this book
I’ve listened to a John Gierach audiobook before and this one was just as great
Mike Chamberlain is an excellent reader and if you’ve ever heard Gierach in an interview, you’ll find Chamberlain was a great choice, really gets the inflections and humour that’s written - wonderful book, you’ll want to go fishing the whole time
