Publisher's summary

Lone Survivor meets Marley & Me in this inspiring buddy memoir of an extraordinary service dog whose enduring love brought a wounded soldier back to life.

A decade ago Special Forces warrior Jason Morgan parachuted into the Central American jungle on an anti-narcotics raid. He'd served with the famous Night Stalkers on countless such missions. This one turned out very different. Months later he regained consciousness in a US military hospital, with no memory of how he'd gotten there. The first words he heard were from his surgeon, telling him he would never walk again. The determined soldier responded, "Sir, yes, I will."

After multiple surgeries, unbearable chronic pain, and numerous setbacks, Morgan was finally making progress when his wife left him and their three young sons. He was a single father confined to a wheelchair and tortured by his pain. At this very dark, very low point, Morgan found light: Napal, the black Labrador who would change his life forever.

A Dog Called Hope is the incredible story of a remarkable service dog who brought a devastated warrior back from the brink. It is the story of one funny, lovable dog's power to heal a family and teach a wounded man how to be a true father. It is the story of an amazing dog with boundless loyalty who built bridges between his wheelchair-bound battle buddy and the rest of able-bodied humankind. It is the story of how one very special dog gave a man's life true meaning. Humorous, intensely moving, and uplifting, Jason and Napal's heartwarming tale will brighten any day and lift every heart.

They Gave & So Should We

I have donated many times to Wounded Warriors, America’s Vet Dogs, K-9 Hero, Paws for Purple Hearts, and Paralyzed Veterans of America. While reading this amazing story and hearing how much dogs help those who sacrificed so much for us I am pleased to know that my giving has helped so many. Maybe you too will make a donation to help a disabled person.

The Transformative Love and Service of A Well Trained Dog

Going between chapters on training puppies to be service dogs, and chapters about Jason Morgan’s life before and after his paralysis, I found it easier to deal with Jason’s emotional, mental and physical changes due to his new life in a wheelchair. Keep a box of tissues nearby.

Ok

Good story. It took a little longer to get going than I would have liked. I know the book was written by a British author, about an American veteran. But the use of British vernacular took away from points of the story. I found it hard to believe the veteran would speak that way.

Great dog training

Thank you to Jim who puppy trained the dog. I am glad that he and Jason got to meet. I really felt the emotional handover. The achievements of a dog's training abilities and devotion to owner for commitment to service are amazing.

Loyalty & Hope

An emotionally charged story, spanning the depths of depression to the heights of great wondrous achievements, this is such an inspiring story! The bond and love between Jason & Napal is tremendous, and they accomplish so much together. I gained new knowledge and a better understanding of service dogs, the training involved, and the dedication the dogs have towards their masters. A great book!

BEST, IMPACTFUL Book‼️‼️

Heart touching. Inspiring. Inspirational. Profound. Wise. Instructive. Memorable. Worthy. Courageous. Most importantly, IMPACTFUL. These words barely describe how this book touched me. Even if you aren’t a dog lover, this book is a must read for how to leave a positive legacy for the world to be touched by. Jason, YOU give me HOPE to keep soldiering on in life. BLESS YOU. Nepal lives on & you both have touched the world for GOOD❣️‼️❣️‼️❣️‼️❣️‼️❣️‼️❣️‼️❣️

I did not need much convincing…

… On the value of service dogs. I am also a special forces Veteran who was treated to the usual “fire and forget” regime of drugs and medication too often accorded our Returning service men. Fortunately I had several farseeing doctors who prescribed a service dog…who, like Nepal, was a lifesaver. But even so (as Jason Morgan pointed out) I encountered pushback and outright hostility from people who should know better. Morgan nails the difficulties returning veterans face… The incredible love and devotion of these dogs… and the need to spread the word..
