Story
The Workbook for Students includes 365 lessons, one for each day of the year. It is not necessary, however, to do the lessons at that tempo, and one might want to remain with a particularly appealing lesson for more than one day. The practical nature of the Workbook is underscored by the introduction to its lessons, which emphasizes experience through application rather than a prior commitment to a spiritual goal.

Story
A Course in Miracles (ACIM) - the self-study spiritual-thought system that teaches the way to love and forgiveness - has captivated the minds and captured the hearts of millions of people. Delivering inner peace where fear and pain once prevailed, its universal message is unsurpassed in its power to heal. Yet many students report that they have difficulty grasping the principles or keeping up with the lessons. So even while they yearn for the spiritual freedom the course offers, they put the book aside, hoping to get to it one day.

Humanity now, perhaps more than in any previous time, has an opportunity to create a new, saner, more loving world. This will involve a radical inner leap from the current egoic consciousness to an entirely new one. In illuminating the nature of this shift in consciousness, Tolle describes in detail how our current ego-based state of consciousness operates. Then gently, and in very practical terms, he leads us into this new consciousness. We will come to experience who we truly are and learn to live and breathe freely.

The terror of realizing, even dimly, that you have no control over a self-destructive pattern of behavior - that as much as you would want to, you simply cannot stop - can mark a crucial turning point in your life. Story
Five hundred years before the birth of Jesus, a God-realized being named Lao-tzu in ancient China dictated 81 verses, which are regarded by many as the ultimate commentary on the nature of our existence. The classic text of these 81 verses, called the Tao Te Ching or the Great Way, offers advice and guidance that is balanced, moral, spiritual, and always concerned with working for the good.

Publisher's Summary
The Text is Book 1 of 4 (three books and one supplement) of the A Course in Miracles series. A Course in Miracles, also known as "the Course" or ACIM, was scribed by Dr. Helen Schucman. It is a self-study course that aims to assist listeners, readers, and students in achieving spiritual transformation. ACIM presents a purely non-dualistic philosophy of forgiveness and includes practical lessons and applications for the practice of forgiveness in one's daily life.
As its title implies, A Course in Miracles is arranged throughout as a teaching device. It consists of three books: Text, Workbook for Students, and Manual for Teachers. The order in which students choose to use the books, and the ways in which they study them, depends on their particular needs and preferences. Two supplements to the Course: "Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process, Practice" and "The Song of Prayer", are also included as part of ACIM.
The curriculum the Course presents is carefully conceived and is explained, step by step, at both the theoretical and practical levels. It emphasizes application rather than theory, and experience rather than theology. Although Christian in statement, the Course deals with universal spiritual themes. It emphasizes that it is but one version of the universal curriculum. There are many others, this one differing from them only in form. They all lead to God in the end.
Book 1: Text is largely theoretical, and sets forth the concepts on which the Course's thought system is based. Its ideas contain the foundation for the lessons in Book 2, the Workbook for Students. Without the practical application the Workbook provides, the Text would remain largely a series of abstractions which would hardly suffice to bring about the thought reversal at which the Course aims.
Book 2: Workbook for Students includes 365 lessons, one for each day of the year. Some of the ideas the Workbook presents you will find hard to believe, and others may seem to be quite startling. This does not matter. You are merely asked to apply the ideas as you are directed to do. You are not asked to judge them at all. You are asked only to use them. It is their use that will give them meaning to you, and will show you that they are true.
Book 3: Manual for Teachers is written in question and answer form, and provides answers to some of the more likely questions a student might ask. It also includes a clarification of a number of the terms the Course uses, explaining them within the theoretical framework of the Text. The Course makes no claim to finality, nor are the lessons in its Workbook intended to bring the student's learning to completion. At the end, the reader is left in the hands of his or her own Internal Teacher, Who will direct all subsequent learning as He sees fit.
Supplements to ACIM, "Psychotherapy: Purpose, Process, Practice" and "The Song of Prayer", were scribed by Dr. Helen Schucman, as was A Course in Miracles, and are extensions of its principles.

Finally a way out of the mind created labyrinth
Where does A Course in Miracles: Text, Vol. 1 rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Have to rate this audio book pretty high. How is it possible for a channeled book to articulate such a mind purified message. I get that the scribe was a very articulate and brilliant thinker; was it really channeled well to tell the truth i actually dont care, One is amused however by the audio's delicate omission of the scribes obvious allusions to modern psychology and especially the name freud ...to tell the truth i find the entire text rather spellbinding, it was as if i had entered some alternative universe where the things i imagined as real were now almost absurd. At last i thought a way out of the labyrinth can this really be possible? as a beginner i am still struggling to following the various threads. I read with awe that the cause of all my suffering has been this wrong mindedness. what then is a pure mind i ask ..is a non perceptual reality or mind really possible. ....wow
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The book begins with an amazing premise. Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God. and so what is real and what is dream. We are informed very early on that in the genesis account of creation Adam was put to sleep by god and yet no where is it ever mentioned that he ever woke up. Now this notion of dreaming is a fundamental eastern philosophy and yet in the course one is excited to discover that man is not abandoned in his dream or trance like state. The buddhist concept of this maya is that the mind from begingless time to eternity is enslaved by the same or similar false perception..... in the course we have this disembodied voice of jesus the awakened one saying not so much wake up but to realise that none of this weaking or dreaming is really happening..... so i ask why would we not just run amok and do as we please; well maybe thats what we have been doing for eternity, are we happy with this mere eternity or is it actually possible to walk off the stage into a non or acasual other reality? i am rambling thinking aloud suffice to say that the course why sstill beyond my puny mind alludes to possibilities that i could not have imagined and thats sweet.

Not useful for real course students
What disappointed you about A Course in Miracles: Text, Vol. 1?
This is NOT a review of A Course in Miracles. It is a review of the Audible rendition of it. The chapter list in the Audible content does not correspond to the chapter in ACIM so there is no way to go to a particular chapter that you are studying. The voice does not announce what chapter it is at the start of each section, so I can't even use that to go back or forth and find the right place. This Audible book is basically useless to me.
Would you be willing to try another book from Dr. Helen Schucman (scribe)? Why or why not?
Yes of course, but not in Audible format unless the fix the chapter list.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I LOVE The book, in printed form, just not the Audible version.
Any additional comments?
It would be awesome if they would redo this with real chapters.

Explains the Greatest Truth & the Beatitudes
For the Biblically-oriented, the course is the clearest explanation that I have come across of how to actually live and obtain the promises of the Beatitudes of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew5:1-12; Luke6:20-49) - Jesus' greatest sermon about our human spiritual needs for self-actualization. For example, becoming “clean of heart” so that we will see God can be understood by studying the course as "forgiving all the errors in our beliefs and others', so that we will perceive the world rightly without judgement'. The course clearly aims to go well beyond activating aspects of our higher self in order to live an enlightened life, to becoming fully-aware children of God living in conscious union with Him; from living at 0.01%.of our abilities to 100% - incapable of fear or lack.
I couldn't fit the course into any single religion - Orthodox Christianity, New Age (Gnostic, Christian Science, etc.) or Eastern (Buddhism, Hinduism). While there were elements of similarity, the need of any one religion to differentiate itself from another introduces traditions and cultures which then distracts from the message. The course content is what some of the nondualistic religions would probably communicate without their exoteric variations. Unfortunately, religious traditions make it difficult for a 'believer of a religion' who has committed faith into it to be open-minded - at least until a circumstance in their lives force them to open their minds to truth.
For any seeker of truth and self-actualization, the truth in the course is self-evident and outlines the path to a very high level of transcendent enlightenment which unlike many paths, is undiluted by any tradition keepers egos.
This is without a doubt, the second most important book I have ever read (alongside the Bible inclusive, despite all its re-written history and missing gaps). I predict that it will be influential in ushering in an age of long-lasting peace and abundance.
I hope this helps any careful Truth-seeker (Christians inclusive).

Course Students will adore.
I actually didn't think I would enjoy it as much as I am, when I listened to the narration, I was not pleased with the voice. I thought it dry and unenthusiastic. But 10 hours in, I can say Mr. Stewart was an excellent choice. His pacing is excellent, his enunciation clear.
The Course can be daunting, and I truly believe being able to listen as well as read will be helpful to any serious Course student.

I won't lie. It's deep.
Having heard so much about the 'Course In Miracles', I thought that it would flow and be much like Rhonda Byrnes or Marianne Williamson. This is not easy reading. Many people tell me 'The Four Agreements' is difficult to understand and I find it very fluid and easy to read and understand. 'The 'Course in Miracles' is not nighttime reading. It is what it says, a course. You have to be alert and focused to understand the concepts and teachings. It is no wonder that people convene to study the teachings in a group. I think this is the route to take if you really want to comprehend this book.

I am SO excited ACIM is on Audible!! This this the CD version for those that have it (I purchased this exact material for over $100 5-6 years ago). Jim Stewart is an excellent narrator. I love the fact that I can listen to the Course in the car now. For those who haven't heard of ACIM and are interested...I would recommend starting with Disappearance of the Universe (book form not the audio...audio is too distracting with the three narrators). It if speaks to you, it can change your life!

A GREAT GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING LIFE!!! I have the actual book but don't always have time to read it and when I do it slow reading due to the way it was written and the content. I often find myself re-reading the paragraph several times. Listening to it has made it much easier to study the Course and my understanding has increased. I can do other activities or I can simply be while listening to it and that's awesome! I highly recommend this to other Course students.
What did you like best about this story?
The Course makes sense of the nonsensical things in life. It helps one learn to gain peace and live in a space of love.
What does Jim Stewart bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I love how he reads the course. He does so in a manner that I'm able to grasp the content much easier than reading.
What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?
Life is but a dream

The most powerful voice of truth
This audio version of A Course in Miracles is so powerful that I can only listen to it a bit a time. The teachings and principles are so deep that it drops down into my awareness and learning and resonnates the sound of truth.
Who could have the depth of maturity and mastery of understanding of the material and make such a magnificent job of it but for Jim Stewart? He reads the book with such a sense of embodied knowledge. It makes me feel fully connected to the work.
A Course in Miracles is a large volume of text to read and to digest and for me p be able to listen to it be shared in such a calm and peaceful way is a real gift.
I recommend this audio book to anyone interested in A Course in Miracles even if you have the book I suggest it goes into different channels of learning in the listening format.
Wonderful piece of work - thank you.

Well...
....as far as i am able to say, a true teaching. Even those working other paths back home might be fascinated and uplifted. i cannot compliment the narrator enough, Jim Stewart, who speaks in a clear voice intoning the words as only someone could who understands them, at a steady pace helping the listener with the flow of ideas. I far prefer to listen to ACIM now, to reading the text.

A Great Tool Fir Course Studies
If you could sum up A Course in Miracles: Text, Vol. 1 in three words, what would they be?
This is the exact audio version of the course. The course is very heavy reading and I found this audio program as a great approach. At first the sound of the narrator's was a bit annoying - sounds like the traditional evening news - but over time I found to appreciate that the neutral, serious tone of the the voice is a good fit. The audio book allows me to listen to this while walking, cleaning the house and just sitting on the sofa and allowed me to work through this book.
There is no commentary here - just the audio version of the book.
Any additional comments?
This is a powerful tool in The Course at Miracles

Any additional comments?

Not a listen for those wanting to do the course
It’s a good choice for those just interested in the text, or perhaps those wanting to revisit it, however not one for first time users wanting to do A COURSE IN MIRACLES. Needs better description and classification in its product description. Deeply disappointed
It’s merely the text from the whole compendium recited. This on its own is fine, however 37 hours of it without a hint of context or relation to the course overall is a waste of a credit if you wanted to pursue the course.
Performance is monotone and flat, and 37 hours of it is quite some going. The text, when Used in conjunction with the workbook and exercises is probably very useful, however like this it is repetitive, needs editing and superfluous.

A good book to have.
I like the teachings and continued to listen/read though most of the time I really didn't understand what Jesus was saying. However as I'm keen to learn and understand I will read others books simplifying ACIM and come back to it from time to time.

A course in how to live our lives
I have listened to the audio through twice now and will continue to do so for many more. There is so much to take in and learn from, yet it is so simple too. It amazes me how many times I have put it on to listen to and it has been the perfect lesson for that moment. Whenever I am in fear I try to do as the course says and choose again. It has helped me to overcome chronic anxiety and build loving relationships with all the people in my life. I am writing this from a hospital bed after an accident where I am constantly reminded that I am not my body and that ours minds are joined when my pain dissolves and love enters.

A problematic text
I loved the book A Course in Miracles (ACIM). I read many chapters in my mid 20’s and had a breakthrough. The idea of choosing to serve either the ego or God made sense to me and at some stage in the reading process God broke through and my ego was silenced. The experience held for a couple of days until the ego slowly snuck back in and took up its position of control again. I was too young and inexperienced to know how to find my way home again.
Since then I have done many different courses and studied many different ideas and I have had at various times those openings again. Choosing again and again to listen to God or our deeper knowing does make a lot of sense and it is the premise which ACIM is largely founded on.
So 40 years later after hearing Eckhart Tolle reading some quotes from the workbook part of ACIM I decided to undertake ACIM again via the audio book. The first thing I noticed was the authoritative nature of the book, it was not a discussion but this was the only way. I was ok with this as the choice between God and ego needs to be very directive, it is not something you can sit on the fence with. The ego will slip back into control in a heartbeat.
I was not so happy with the language in the book. Totally gender based around the male. His kingdom, the sonship, your brothers. I never heard her or she mentioned anywhere. ACIM was written in the late 60’s so maybe we can give a little wiggle room but surprising nonetheless that an inspired book in this time would not get the gender issue sorted. The patriarchal tone of authority and gender positioning however was consistent. I am feeling a little uneasy.
Another component in the book which was also concerning was around the need to become teachers of ACIM. The only way to practice the material was to teach it. We were essentially to become evangelists for what was being proposed. This was to become in essence our inner calling. You are probably aware there is a compendium to ACIM called “Manual for Teachers”
However it was Chapter 96 of ACIM audio book which stopped me in my tracks. The chapter was around your brothers and to see your brothers as you see yourself.
"Suppose a brother insists on having you do something you think you do not want to do, his very insistence should tell you that he believes salvation lies in it, if you insist on refusing and experience a quick response of opposition you are believing that your salvation lies in not doing it. You then are making the same mistake he is and making his error real to both of you"
….
"Whenever you become angry with a brother for whatever reason you are believing the ego is to be saved and to be saved by attack. If he attacks you are agreeing with this belief and if you attack you are reinforcing it. Remember that those who attack are poor; their poverty asks for gifts not for further impoverishment. You who could help them are surely acting destructively if you accept their poverty as yours. If you had not invested as they had it would never occur to you to overlook their need. Recognize what does not matter and if your brothers ask you for something outrageous do it because it does not matter, refuse and your opposition establishes that it does matter to you. It is only you therefore that has made the request outrageous and every request of a brother is for you. Why would you insist in denying him, for to do so is to deny yourself and impoverish both."
Don’t challenge your brother but allow him to do what he wants as any challenge to your brother is really just a projection of your own separation. This position had been hinted at dozens of times in ACIM but only at this point was it so clearly articulated.
I could not go on. It did not make sense and felt dangerous. The book is christian based and apparently inspired by a person by the name of jesus. We are all aware of how Jesus responded when he found people selling and buying goods in the temple.
John 2:13–16. And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the seats of them that sold doves, And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.
He was angry and made this very clear. He did not continue to allow them to sell goods in the temple. If I followed the position in ACIM, it would mean that no matter what I was experiencing from a brother (or sister) I would allow it to occur. This includes rape, torture, deprivation etc.. But I will say more about this in a moment.
As I mentioned I dearly loved this book in my 20’s and so it was somewhat of a quandary for me. I decided to do some further research and see if anyone else had reservations. The book was a collaboration between William Thetford and Helen Shucman between the years 1965 and 1972.
I read the reviews on Amazon 85% five star, 3% one star. I headed to the one star. Has anyone experienced a similar difficulty with this book ?
And there it was in a one star review:
From 1971 to 1978 William Thetford, along with David Saunders, headed the CIA mind control Project MKULTRA (Subproject 130: Personality Theory (Project MKUltra, also called the CIA mind control program, is the code name given to a program of experiments on human subjects that were designed and undertaken by the United States Central Intelligence Agency).
I looked up MKULTRA and as I read what it was about I felt physically sick.
Project MKUltra (or MK-Ultra) was the code name of an illegal human experimentation program designed and undertaken by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The experiments were intended to develop procedures and identify drugs such as LSD that could be used in interrogations to weaken individuals and force confessions through brainwashing and psychological torture. MKUltra used numerous methods to manipulate its subjects' mental states and brain functions, such as the covert administration of high doses of psychoactive drugs (especially LSD) and other chemicals, electroshocks,[4] hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, and verbal and sexual abuse, in addition to other forms of torture.
So Thetford who for 7 years (1971 to 1978) immersed himself in ACIM and its focus of love with the uprising of joy as the guiding light in 1971 commences work with the CIA, ACIM gets published 4 years later in 1975.
At the very least you would have to have some significant questions about what is happening here and while I caution against conspiracy theories I think it is ok to be open to the idea that ACIM may ultimately have been at least for Thetford an experiment in mind control. Consider two of the recurring basic premises: to allow your brother to do anything he wants (aka US Government) and go forth and spread this teaching to the world as this is the only way you will learn the true meaning of ACIM (brainwash as many people as you can). The best counter argument I have read to this position is by Joe R. Jesseph, Ph.D. titled
Regarding Conspiracy Rumors about Dr. William Thetford, the CIA and A Course in Miracles.
I will leave it to the reader to come to their own conclusions or further questions. However I would say there is no dispute between either position that Thetford was working for the CIA conducting Personality Theory experiments under MK-ULTRA at the same time the A Course in Miracles book was published in 1975.

My favourite spiritual text.
This is the second time I've read ACIM, with those two readings being separated by over 10 years, my brothers suicide and my recent wife's death. I started listening again about 1 week after my Jules died. It was difficult to bring myself to entertain any idea other than grief and misery so this reading has taken me over two months, with many invitations to read (listen) being denied. Each time I accepted though, I was left just a little more healed, or readied for healing.
And Healing is a massive part of this book. It is the same as Forgiveness, which is the same as the Miracle, because it is the healing and forgiveness of the Self (which never 'sinned') through the forgiveness of every living thing that 'ever was'.. coming to know them, us, it, as totally One.
I won't say more because part of the utter delight of ACIM is the gentle, steady and powerful unveling of the concepts that will undo all concepts that keep us from an understanding and union with God, our creator.
I adore this book and thank God We Gave it Ourselves. ;)
