Publisher's summary

A Couple's Guide to Happy Retirement is the most comprehensive audiobook devoted entirely to relationship issues in retirement. Not a treatise on money management, this is a much-needed guide to the psychological aspects of retirement and how to make your retirement relationship happy, fruitful, loving, and successful. Written by a psychologist specializing in work and family issues, and drawing from actual accounts from retired couples, this audiobook:

  • Helps you prepare emotionally for the dramatic life changes during retirement
  • Coaches you to find new purposes to your life beyond work
  • Nurtures the relationship with your companion to strengthen your friendship and love
  • Explores sexuality after retirement and how you can enjoy each other as much as you did as a younger couple
  • Recommends strategies to successfully deal with differences around money, time together versus apart, housework, and family relationships.

It is crucial that couples prepare themselves and their marriages psychologically for what could very well comprise a quarter of their lives. A Couple's Guide to Retirement explores how to do that - so that you'll have the time of your lives.

a pretty solid book, enjoyed the topics

I will need all this info in less than 20 years, so thought it would be smart to learn about it now. Technically, the narrator's performance could be better in that her editor forgot to chop out her mistakes. There are about seven places in the book where she stopped and started over talking and whomever was supposed to edit her performance was asleep at the wheel. Hopefully they will re-edit the audio tape and reissue it as a corrected version. Not a huge deal, but it could have been a little more polished.

sound advise, great at explaining impact on couple

This book is very good at explaining the psychological differences of how retirement impacts each person in the relationship along with many ways to avoid or deal with the problems.

it could be improved if the concepts were broken down and explained more. it is good that there are many website references to pursue and expand the subjects discussed.

great retirement planning tool

Most books about retirement focus on the financial side of it. This book focuses on all the other important stuff, like relationships, where you choose to live, how you spend all that non-work time and what retirement actually is.
I think this book is most useful for folks that are nearing retirement. It offers a range of subjects that people should think through before actually retiring.

Great Read

Good for planning and executing retirement. More to the subject than money and time. Will listen again.

Provides food for thought

The book offered some good ideas and examples of things husbands and wives should think and talk about with respect to retirement. It is unfortunate the author assumes certain things will affect the husband or the wife in a certain way when it could be the opposite. This got tiring and old.

Useless diatribe don't bother reading this.

Would you try another book from Sara Yogev, Ph.D. and/or Debbie Feldman?

No not really. I'm sure they are great at what they do but my wife and I were so absolutely bored by the lack of concrete information that we just fast forwarded. After finally finding out the top 10 things you can do section i discovered it was useless like all the other information in the book.

Has A Couple's Guide to Happy Retirement turned you off from other books in this genre?

Yes, in the future I will read more reviews and listen to the excerpts.

Would you be willing to try another one of Debbie Feldman’s performances?

No sir.

What character would you cut from A Couple's Guide to Happy Retirement?

Everyone.
