Publisher's Summary

As Miss Marple sat basking in the Caribbean sunshine, she felt mildly discontented with life. True, the warmth eased her rheumatism, but here in paradise nothing ever happened.

Eventually, her interest was aroused by an old soldier's yarn about a murderer he had known. Infuriatingly, just as he was about to show her a snapshot of this acquaintance, the Major was suddenly interrupted. A diversion that was to prove fatal.

the voices ruined the story

Aside from this mystery being by far the easiest to solve out of most of the Miss marple's, Emilia foxes voices for the story were both seemingly racist and distracting. Overall the story had the same charm that Agatha Christie never ceases to bring but within the first hour I knew who the murderer was. And Emilia foxes voices were extremely annoying.

Choppy!

The reader's voice is annoying. It sounds like popcorn in a tin pot.
Not enough timbre difference between mane and female voices.

Murder in a Sunny Locale

As a Christie fan I quite enjoyed this Miss Marple story. It's a fairly standard enjoyable Miss Marple tale, with a new locale.

If the book suffers, it suffers from two issues. First, the dated labels used in reference to a few of the island inhabitants aren't exactly PC today and may put off some people, but this book wasn't written today and, as Miss Marple says in the book, one must make allowances. Second, the narrator has a tendency to contrive voices for characters that can be shrill (Lucky), accents foreign to her can be hit or miss and sometimes downright comical (Victoria), and male voices are often a difficulty for her. In one case there was a fairly shrill male voice and I found myself glad he died. However, as usual, the narrator does brilliantly with the character of Miss Marple and does very well when not reading in a character's voice.

Classic!

All of what became classic bits are there with mis-identified people and red herrings and crypto. Simply a joy to read.

Yay, Emilia Fox!

At first, I was quite put out that I would have to go from Richard E. Grant to an unknown quantity to hear more Miss Marple.

Now I am glad that that happened. Emilia Fox is even better! !

Multi-faceted mystery

Miss Marple, though away from her usual surroundings and way of life, still manages to solve multiple murders and prevent another. Very surprising and enjoyable.

Nicely done; a bit rambling but worth reading

If you could sum up A Caribbean Mystery in three words, what would they be?

Interesting tropical mystery

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

I'm not much of an edge-of-the-seat reader, but there were enough twists and turns to keep me interested, and I'll listen again to find nuances I missed.

Which character – as performed by Emilia Fox – was your favorite?

I thought all of the women characters were pretty well performed, with the exception of Lucky. My favorite is Molly, simply because she was striving so hard against a variety of odds.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It was the perfect beach read.
