1931. The Depression. Economic devastation. Breadlines, flophouses, shantytowns.
Brianna Quinn, ex-board racer, adventuress, widow, locksmith, and part time cat burglar (“A gal’s gotta eat.”) specializing in box jobs. One fine evening, as she was in the library of T. William Stilton’s townhouse cracking the combination to his safe, the lights go on. She’s caught, but Stilton has a need for a safecracker, which results in her becoming aware of a hidden vault containing a priceless Medieval Book of Hours. The vault keys are missing.
This leads to a hunt for a missing nephew and the realization that Stilton is not what he claims. A flight in a Stinson Tri-motor leads to a chance meeting with a woman named Agatha and her granddaughter, Prudence, who are desperate, poverty-stricken, and looking for a way out.
They take Brianna to the place where she hopes to obtain the keys and thus get into the vault.
It does not go well.
