Publisher's summary

Tariq Trotter, a.k.a. Black Thought, sits firmly within the pantheon of hip-hop’s greatest MCs. But the cofounder of the multiplatinum-selling hip-hop band The Roots is best understood not through all trophies and awards, but the sheer weight of his lyrical force.

In 7 Years, Trotter’s new addition to Audible’s Words + Music series, the prolific rapper examines his life and career in dynamic seven-year increments. Featuring a powerful and personal musical score, Trotter takes listeners through his intimate journey, including his tumultuous childhood in Philadelphia, facing off with a justice system that was stacked against him, and adapting to commercial success in mainstream America. Mixing complex rhymes with searing insight, 7 Years finds a singular creative voice opening up and speaking volumes.

Philly Love :)

This was such a wonderful listen. Tarik’s eloquent words scored with a rich blend of his own discography and the music that inspires him, creates a warm but motivating atmosphere. It felt like a MasterClass held in an intimate jazz bar. Tarik shares his philosophy on life, growth and the pain and loss that he managed to alchemize into greatness. Also enjoyed his brief history lesson on graffiti and the part it played in the early days of hip-hop.

very Predictable

Not enough substance. typical hip hop journey. Pain, heartbreak, jail, substance abuse,etc..Was really expecting more of what was learned to share versus the predictable journey.

An Extension of who we Know&Love as Black Thought

Thanks BT for sharing more pieces to the puzzle with us. interesting how 7 Years begins and ends with a death, still it has so much life.

I won't get long winded but I just want to share my first time seeing you guys perform. it was the early 90s, Proceed was on "The Box" but it was a while before 'Do You Want More' came out.

you guys were already touring and Detroit was on list, at this time your weren't doing large venues in our area. I caught the bus to go see you guys set up and perform at a "Block Buster" music location. And I believe I bought the album there.

Won of my favorite concert stories because you visit Detroit pretty much every year now but it's much bigger places but I always remember the small show.

A 1st in Hip-Hop Memoirs

Black Thought thoughtfully produced a listening memoir that recounts 7 year increments of his life as a Hip-Hop artist in the Roots! I enjoyed the experience and appreciated the musical interludes. Things Fall Apart was my first Roots album and I've been a fan since. Looking forward to the next project!

Exceptional!

I wish it was longer! Black thought is one of my favorite emcees. To hear a backdrop of his story was long overdue. Definitely worth multiple listens.

Be entertained while learning something

A music genre that I am mostly ignorant about. Not a survey class in the history but a well presented, personal account of a participant in that history. A welcome addition to this Audible series. So great to be entertained while learning something!

Thank you that was delightful!

Very real, but upbeat points to the importance of faith that sometimes somehow inspite of all the things that are against us we can still rise succeeding and growing as we grow the world around us!

thanks for taking the time to write and record this!!
