Win the project management game

A project manager role is similar to a sports coach—you can win only with your team. You have to focus on essential aspects, such as being a leader, planning the scope and time, managing risks, and becoming a strong executor in closing tasks early. These are well developed in the book.

Lead a project of any size

Generally, I think the book fits very well with professionals and non-project managers who lead their initiatives and private projects. I lead many initiatives and process improvements that can be managed as little projects. I cooperate with people, and there, the leadership skills come into play. The author offers all leadership, interpersonal and communication skills that are essential for project management. I particularly liked advanced problem-solving skills. I struggled with certain conflict situations, but the advice to classify them per category helped me view them differently and apply an effective method. This book also gave me answers to why most projects did not succeed in our company. The author presents the essential skills a project manager needs and how they can improve the culture, gain support from the sponsor, stakeholders, and team members. I liked the tips for closing tasks quickly and preventing scope creep. Understanding team members (bits of psychology) and being your team's best fan are the first stepping stones for an efficient team. The narration is superb!

Ethics and integrity

It seems obvious that everybody works ethically and with integrity. However, I have seen projects where this was lacking and it included managers. The author team captured this aspect in their book.

SERVE for SUCCESS

The audiobook shines in the last chapters, bringing a new concept of the game—serving. It’s true that only with empathy, good listening, and humility can one achieve most because projects are done by other people than project managers.

NEW PERSPECTIVE

I have gone through many books on project management, and they describe techniques and tools, such as planning, executing, monitoring, Gantt chart, WBS. However, this one is exceptional as it focuses on interpersonal skills and gathers together all that you will need to become successful.

Emotional Intelligence, Leadership, Communication

Emotional intelligence, leadership, and communication are critical aspects of any project manager, as we all know. These are the main topics developed in detail here. Well, most project management books are about technical skills while we have to search for soft skills elsewhere. However, this book brings them together.

Deal with problems, win battles

Problems are inevitable in projects. More complex, diverse, and lengthy projects make them very difficult. I liked the presented structured approach to how to classify and approach them. Also, preparing for negations was something I overlooked often. Now I am equipped with tools to win many battles, not just for me but for the whole project and team. Thank you!

Become a leader in project management

I knew the difference between a manager and a leader. But I was surprised that this is more critical in projects than in other management fields since a PM spends over 80% of their time communicating. I recommend this audiobook to anybody who wants to level up the game.

Negotiation is key

I was surprised with many details about negotiation. I am not a strong person and do not win many battles. The audiobook provides many details and advanced strategies on negotiation, how to prepare and deal with opponents. The negotiation checklist is a great bonus. Other parts of the book were also superb.
