Beaten. Branded. Defiant.

Anna is a possession. She is owned by the man named Will, shielded from the world of struggles by his care. He loves her, protects her and then breaks her. Anna is obedient, dutiful and compliant. Anna does not know her place in the world.

When she falls pregnant, Anna leaves her name behind, and finds the strength to run. But the past - and Will - catch up with her in an idyllic town with a dark secret, and this time, it's not just Anna who is at risk.

No.

There was so much potential here. I love the concept. I was excited about it.

Right off the bat I was annoyed. I kept thinking "Right. She's going through the worst experience of her life. That is why she's acting this way. I understand." But there comes a point where she needs to grow a spine. It annoyed me how weak she was. I understand that she is broken. But the broken bits went on to the point of annoyance. I feel like "We get it!"

When she escapes, nothing happens for the next dozen chapters. This could have been a time when she finds her strength and becomes empowered because she survived. But no. lt's constantly "I just want to be alone" .

If you wanted to be alone, why did you settle around people?

The protagonist was so pathetic. Trust me I know abuses not an easy thing to deal with, but the author didn't let her grow or overcome. She didn't give the protagonist any strength. She was pathetic. Annoyingly so.

No. I wasn't expecting this to be a women's empowerment story, but I did expect the protagonist to transform and transcend. There was none of that. She was just pathetic.

The ending made me angry. I thought surely there would be some growth. Surely the end will bring this whole thing together. Surely something will happen to make her pathetic existence worth it in the end. Surely!

No.

It was a cheap way to finish the book. It could have been glorious had it gone a different direction, but no. It was so unsatisfying.

I would not waste a credit on this book. Thank goodness I could return it.
