Years ago, boundary witch Allison “Lex” Luther made a promise to an alpha werewolf. Now, just when the supernatural community in Colorado is enjoying a period of hard-won peace, the alpha turns up at Lex’s door to call in his marker. Two of his pack members have disappeared in the Colorado sand dunes, and he needs safe passage to hunt for them.
With her friend Simon Pellar along for backup, Lex ventures into the dunes to search for the missing couple…but what they find is only the opening move in an ambitious assault against those who hold power in the Colorado Old World. An old enemy has returned to tear their peace apart, and Lex is soon embroiled in politics she doesn’t understand, from a time before she had magic.
To save her friends and her way of life, Lex will have to cross every line she’s drawn since learning what she is—and it may still be too late.

I re-read the entire series before reading this, and loved how they all flowed together. I find her characters interesting and quirky, and her version of the paranormal world is one of my favorite interpretations.
Alison 'Lex' Luther is a boundary witch -- one who straddles the line between life and death. Olson has created a life for her that's multi-layered and fascinating. I adore the secondary characters, especially Simon & Lily Pellar, Maven, an extremely old vampire who looks like an artsy college student, and one of my favorite characters, Sashi, a thaumaturgic witch.
I wasn't terribly engaged at the beginning, but the story gained momentum and the last 2/3 or so were up to Olson's standards. As always, Kate Rudd did an amazing job with the narration, but I'd like her to listen to the Scarlet series so she knows how to pronounce 'Dashiel.'

this is quite possibly the best book in the series...
it's a lot less self-contained and draws on the previous books as well as set up the following ones very nicely...
and I look forward to more like it ..
Kate Rudd does a great job voicing the characters and giving them heart...
always look forward to hearing from her
more of the same...

They have an old enemy with a very clever plan back here in this book. I like the research on the different parts of Colorado.
What I love about Lex's story is how all her friends and family can be her vulnerability, strength and secret power at the same time.
