The modern West Virginia town of Grantville has been displaced in time to continental Europe in 1632. Now four years have passed. The long-feared attack on Austria by the Ottoman Empire has begun. Armed with new weapons inspired by the time-displaced Americans of Grantville, the Turks are determined to do what they were unable to do in the universe the Americans came from: capture Vienna.

The Ottomans have the advantage of being able to study the failings and errors of their own campaigns in a future they can now avoid. They are led by the young, dynamic, and ruthless Murad IV, the most capable emperor the Ottomans have produced in a century. They are equipped with weapons that would have seemed fantastical to the Turks of that other universe: airships, breech-loading rifles, rockets, even primitive tanks. And this time they won't have to face massive reinforcements from Austria's allies. In fact the only force Emperor Gustav Adolf can think of sending to Austria is the United States of Europe Third Division under the command of Mike Stearns. It's an army currently engaged in a desperate struggle for Bavaria. The emperors of the USE and Austria share the same problem. They have one too many enemies, one too few allies, and only one general to cover the gaps. Fortunately, that general is Mike Stearns, also known as the Prince of Germany.

Very good story, and series. Do your self a favor though. Start at the beginning with 1632. You will get more out of this book and the series is well worth it.

Another Great Story Well Told

Eric Flint keeps rolling out the great stories, expanding his world. This sets up a whole lot of trouble for the vast set of characters in his universe. Well done.

What? Thats it????

Awesomely wonderful book and petformance. George Guidall is amazing. Eric Flint just has an uncanny way with words and sayings and phrases. Its just amazingly enjoyable to read or listen to. I love his subtle humor as well. Just hilarious.

HOWEVER, as much as i love this book and this series, this particular one just takes the cake fir Dumb Endings. The book just all of a sudden.....ends. Not even an anticlimax. Just....ends. So much so I had to run the audible back a couple of times just to make sure there wasnt an error. Im still somewhat doubtful. It just all if a sudden ended at the end of chapter 61. Very disappointing and left me wondering where the rest if the book was.

Great book

I enjoy all of the 1632 series books. However I felt like this one stopped in the middle of a chapter. Usually I feel the end of the book getting close but this one seemed to stop almost mid sentence. I do not like that feeling.

Alt. history will never be the same.

Will mankind reach the moon before the 20th century, with such a jump start from the uptimers?

outstanding series, and narration blending real world and fantasy. characters have great depth and very subtle humour

Abrupt Ending

I checked my copy of the book, and the ending was the same. I'm sure that there was a plan to continue the story, but the death of the author and the numerous story threads made that difficult. For now, I will believe that the Vienna party will be rescued. I also hope that some of the other authors will complete their story threads toward a specific date (say Christmas 1640) with an epilog. Perhaps an encyclopedia of major characters and events. As a living story, there is no way to create an ending, because life for some will go forward. Some closure for the readers and listeners would be great.

I'm so excited with this book that it's my first 5 star review on Audible for an Eric Flint book. I've read or listened to every book in the 1632 series and this is the best of the Series after the 1632, the first book. It's the first time since I read the first book that I enjoyed it all and didn't have to struggle through any part of the story.

I only realized why halfway through why I felt as happy with this book as I was with the first book.....This is the only book since 1632 that wasn't a collaboration with another author. Thank you, Eric. 5 stars for your creation.

Good book poor reading

Book was good, however the pronunciation of names of characters and places were annoyingly bad.

love the book had a great time listening to it.

it is a great addition to the 1632 series would highly recommend it to anyone who is following the series in general.
