Publisher's summary

“An insightful memoir that uncovers unique stories about matters of the heart.” (Essence)

The inspiring New York Times best seller from Common - the Grammy Award, Academy Award, and Golden Globe-winning musician, actor, and activist - explores how love and mindfulness can build communities and allow you to take better control of your life through actions and words.

Common believes that the phrase “let love have the last word” is not just a declaration; it is a statement of purpose, a daily promise. Love is the most powerful force on the planet, and ultimately, the way you love determines who you are and how you experience life.

Touching on God, self-love, partners, children, family, and community, Common explores the core tenets of love to help us understand what it means to receive and, most important, to give love. He moves from the personal - writing about his daughter, to whom he wants to be a better father - to the universal, where he observes that our society has become fractured under issues of race and politics. He knows there's no quick remedy for all of the hurt in the world, but love - for yourself and for others - is where the healing begins.

In his first public reveal, Common also shares a deeply personal experience of childhood molestation that he is now confronting...and forgiving.

Courageous, insightful, brave, and characteristically authentic, Let Love Have the Last Word shares Common’s own unique and personal stories of the people and experiences that have led to a greater understanding of love and all it has to offer. It is a powerful call to action for a new generation of open hearts and minds, one that is sure to resonate for years to come.

Heartfelt and Beautifully Done

I haven’t read many memoirs, so I was a little skeptical at first. However, Common’s memoir was beautifully told and his narration was the cherry on top.

His anecdotes and observations touched a nerve, and I looked forward to each day when I could listen and take in his story.

I gift books often, and this one has been added to the list!

Love, Love, Love Rules The Day

I love Common's voice and have for some years now. It was great hearing him give life to his words of love wisdom. Being a better father, son, public speaker and lover were not always easy for him...and he's still growing, as we all are. Great advice to anyone who is in a space of growth and healing. Loved that he disclosed that he sees a therapist regularly. Our brothers need to hear this. Get your mental health checked and often. Great listen. Do not hesitate to buy this book! One love...

A memoir for thinkers

I really enjoyed this book. If you’re a thinker this is the book for you. Such great insights on love. It’s worth listening to a second time…at least.

Must Read, Common broke down walls with this one

I was so impressed by the content. I could identify with so much. It helped me. I love Common. This made me appreciate Rashid even more because he exposed himself so that others can find healing and it was beautiful. I am so grateful I got the book. I listen to it over and over.

Moving beyond what's common

What a thoughtful and moving memoir. There is nothing common about this level of openness. I really appreciate how vulnerable Common is in this book as he shows us his walk towards love. I hope anyone suffering from abuse in silence or who is in need of therapy reads this book. We all could learn a lot from actively practicing the art of love. I also hope young men read this book and see that being vulnerable is nothing to be ashamed of and is only one side of masculinity (and the one that's needed more often). Imagine a world where masochist toxicity is removed and men are encouraged to promote walking in love and light. It's a world where books like this are supported (and maybe soon not needed). I was already a fan but now I'm even more enamored.

Very Inspiring

This book was well-written. I appreciate the open and honest way Common presented and shared himself within this book. For an aspiring artists who often gets stuck behind how people will receive that which I have within, there were so many gems of wisdom that were dropped throughout this book! God has a funny way of putting your deliverance in obscure places. If you happen to see this Common, you are so a Prophet. The whole section that spoke of art and the Divine brought me to tears. I will be suggesting that others read this piece of your heart!
