Publisher's summary

The idea that you could be more but got in your own way should wake you up in the middle of the night. Dave Hollis used to think that “personal growth” was just for broken people, then he woke up.

When a looming career funk, a growing drinking problem, and a challenging trek through therapy battered Dave Hollis, a Disney executive and father of four, he began to realize he was letting untruths about himself dictate his life. As he sank to the bottom of his valley, he had to make a choice. Would he push himself out of his comfort zone to become the best man he was capable of being, or would he play it safe and settle for mediocrity?

In Get Out of Your Own Way, Dave tackles topics he once found it difficult to be honest about, things like his struggles with alcohol and his insecurities about being a dad.

Offering encouragement, challenges, and a hundred moments to laugh, Dave will help you:

  • Discover the way for those of us who are, like he was, skeptical of self-help but wanting something more than the status quo
  • Drop negative ideas about who we are supposed to be and finally start living as who we really are
  • See our own journeys more clearly as he unpacks the lies he once believed—such as “I Have to Have It All Together” and “Failure Means You’re Weak”
  • Learn the tools that helped him change his life, and may change your life too

Get Out of Your Own Way is a call to arms for anyone who’s interested in a more fulfilled life, who, along the way, may have lost their “why” and now wonders how to unlock their potential or be better for their loved ones.

Dont Waste Your Time

Boring story about a guy who has always been successful at everything and yet is complaining about how miserable he is. Nothing new here, has all been said before only better. I exchanged this for a better book.

Absolute rubbish. Don't waste your time. 0 stars

This audiobook took me forever to finish. I almost didnt finish it.

Listening to this book AFTER Mr. and Mrs. Perfect announced their marriage had "run its course" and had been rocky for years was definitely an interesting experience. Every thing he said in this book was a lie. I have never rolled my eyes so much. Every chapter was even named after a lie.

I laughed so hard at the part in chapter 12 (I think) where he said something along the lines of "would you take marraige advice from someone in a failing marriage? Of course not, because that's not a credible source" HA! You're telling me buddy. Dave Hollis and his wife Rachel hosted a bullshit marraige bootcamp conference where they greedily charged 200 couples $1700 each to attend. Neither of them have the professional education or experience to council anyone but what does that matter? They happily take all this money from people and then a few months later announce on facebook that they have been struggling in their relationship for years and are divorcing. Incredible. Then they have the nerve to ask the public for grace and privacy during this difficult time.

Aside from the lies and hypocrisy littering every page of this book, Dave Hollis also believes himself to be funny which he isnt and probably also thinks of himself as a good narrator. He's not. He over enounciates every third word. It's like listening to Chandler Bing and ONLY Chandler Bing for hours on end.

The whole book is braggy and nauseating. I hated it. And no, Dave, every bad review of your 'product' is not just because "it just wasnt right for them", you get bad reviews when your products suck.

Get out of your own way and start listening!

***TLDR: Get 👏 this 👏 book 👏, just do it. Trust me. (See below for long babbling review about how much I loved this book + other book recommendations) ***

I had pretty high hopes for this audiobook, but they were surpassed. I’m pleasantly surprised by how powerful this book is yet In subtle and not so subtle ways. It’s raw and real and I couldn’t stop listening. The performance by Dave Hollis was enjoyable as well, authors don't always do well reading their books but this one was great to listen to.

Dave talks about his struggles, hardships, successes and what he’s learned. I enjoyed the no-nonsense, get-it-together approach that really whips you Into shape, yet has a kind and understanding undertone. His stories are so relatable, even though he's gone through vastly different things in his life than I have. It’s especially great coming from someone who seems so successful, hearing about his low times when from the outside it looked like he had it all, and how hard he worked to get where he's at today. I appreciate his honesty about things he has to overcome every day to keep growing, learning, and becoming a better version of himself.

Change your life, you can do it! Hearing about how others continue to grow and how it’s not easy is something we need to hear. After listening to this book it has inspired me to challenge myself in ways I didn't think I'd even want to change, for the better.

This book is for everyone, not people of a specific gender, race, sexual orientation, or belief, but EVERYONE.

Gratefully,
Former Skeptic

Boring

Very boring and self centered about the author’s stories and life. You feel like the author is wining

A Self Help Book from Someone who was a Non-Believer

If you’ve read all the books and are still searching when it comes to personal development this is the book YOU need to read. Get Out Of Your Own Way by Dave Hollis is the first time I felt like I wasn’t reading a personal growth book written by a cheerleader who had always been reaching for more but instead someone who has broken away from his fixed mindset to endless possibilities. This book evaluates a series of obstacles that ultimately he was at the root at and in turn teaches the reader the power of not using these excuses as reasons to be stuck. So many things ARE in our control yet we often don’t see it that way, Dave Hollis leads his reader to understand this. If someone could only read part of this book I would highly recommend Chapter 8 and the Conclusion. In Chapter 8 “Failure Means You’re Weak” we see Dave’s journey with a growth mindset. My favorite quote “the way you think may be leading you, rather than you leading the way you think” reminds us how powerful our thoughts truly are. In the conclusion of the book Dave sets out five areas in ones life that he believes will help you preserve a better life. Ultimately read this book and use one man’s story of growth to help yourself GET OUT OF YOUR OWN WAY!

Marvelous Reminders

I had the privilege of reading with an Advanced Reader Copy from HarperCollins Leadership Launch Team was “Get Out of Your Own Way” by Dave Hollis AND received my audible version this morning! I stumbled or tripped into the world of personal growth in the fall of 2018 by reading a facebook post from a friend that recommended “Girl, Wash Your Face” by Rachel Hollis. Since then, I have been on a daily journey to leap off the hamster wheel, practice daily health and wellness to feel better about myself and establish a path of growth in everything that I do. Fast forward to the present and Rachel’s husband is about to release a book (March 10, 2020) that shares his own limiting beliefs and story on his journey of personal growth. I have followed HollisCo for over a year and attended their women’s conference, Rise in Minneapolis which was a memorable weekend. While I have heard bits and pieces of Dave’s story, it was fantastic to be able to read the stories and gain greater understanding of his “why” on his journey. The book offers suggestions on how to tackle your own issues and applies to men and women. Rachel resonated with me, but so does Dave in a different way. “Get Out of Your Own Way” will challenge you to think about your own journey, but it is up to you to do the work. Let’s GO! #getoutofyourownway #gooyow #harpercollinsambassador

Best Book I’ve ever read

This book has given me so many thoughts and ideas and ambitions and has created a dream for me to be able to accomplish bigger and better in my life. As someone who was not always believed in the self development industry, I have become a practitioner and a believer because of this book. Thank you, Dave. You’re an inspiration to me.

If you are not the traditional self motivated

If you are not the traditional self motivated reach for self improvement books then this is your book.

This book was written for those that do not have a traditional mindset when it comes to the topic of growth mindset but a skeptical mindset. Believing lies that do not serve them and hinder them from reaching their full potential.

And it is full of the reasons why those mindsets and beliefs do not serve us even if we feel like they do.

It is a must read for anyone who believes or has wanted in any small or large format that they can change their skeptical mindset and reach for more.

Let’s gooo Dave Hollis congratulations on a fantastic book and thank you for sharing it with the world!!

I received an advanced readers copy from the publisher but these words and thoughts are all my own.

Thank you Harper Collins. #harpercollinsambassador

Let's GOOOO ... Read This Book!

Dave Hollis is authentic and venerable with opportunities for "I can relate" laughs sprinkled throughout. The introduction—Is Self-Help for Broken People?—quickly breaks down the stigmatism around personal development and the benefits of therapy. Dave shares stories that most men would feel too much shame in sharing with others and he delivers them in a way that it doesn't matter if you're male or female, they are relatable. As a woman, this book has helped me to better understand how my husband and other men in my life may feel about similar situations. This book is on fire and truly inspirational.

Note: I received an advance reader's copy from HarperCollins Leadership. Everything shared in this review are my own thoughts. However, I purchased an audiobook copy as well to hear Dave read his own words (he does a great job narrating).

Book is bad and offers nothing insightful

Even in a bad self help book, you can usually find a few nuggets of wisdom. Not possible here. Unrelatable, zero self-awareness and uninteresting. My hypothesis is Dave Hollis saw the success of his wife's books and took a crack at it. Even in the book he reveals that she was driving force behind his motivation and big decisions. Message of the book: get yourself a spouse that can fix all your problems??

Sorry for being mean, but this is a grift by someone who doesn't even need the money.
