Your best bet is to learn the most common French words that you can use throughout most of your conversations. Even in English, we only use 10-20 percent of words throughout 80-90 percent of our everyday conversations (unless you’re having an intense philosophical or business conversation).

1,000 Most Common French Words in Context = 88 percent of comprehension

A study done on the French language revealed that:

Studying the first 1000 most frequently used words in the language will familiarize you with 76.0 percent of all vocabulary in non-fiction literature, 79.6 percent of all vocabulary in fiction literature, and 87.8 percent of vocabulary in oral speech.

Studying the 2000 most frequently used words will familiarize you with 84 percent of vocabulary in non-fiction, 86.1 percent of vocabulary in fictional literature, and 92.7 percent of vocabulary in oral speech.

And studying the 3000 most frequently used words will familiarize you with 88.2 ppercent of vocabulary in non-fiction, 89.6 percent of  vocabulary in fiction, and 94.0 percent of vocabulary in oral speech.

Without throwing too much research and date at you, these findings brings us to a simple conclusion that can save you a lot of time.

Learning and mastering the first 1,000 most common French words will be an essential milestone we should achieve in any language, as this will allow us to:

• “grasp 88 percent of vocabulary in oral speech” (and most of us are learning with the sole intent to converse with another native speaker)
• “express everything we could possibly want to say”

For most of us, 1,000 words is that sweet mark between result and effort, since learning an additional 1,000 words (2,000 words) will only deliver 5 percent additional comprehension (88 percent to 93 percent).

To serve the purpose of this guide on how to learn languages, we’re going to create a challenge for you to learn 15 of the most common words per day.

This means that after 66 days, you will have learned over 1,000 of the most common words, which is more than enough to understand the language.

No context, no gender, no way - avoid this

Don't buy this book. I purchased it based on the ratings and the promise of being "in context." Ignore both the reviews and the description and save yourself some money or an Audible credit.

Despite claiming to be "in context," this is just a list of spoken words: French, English, French, next word. You don't hear the words in sentences, nor does the speaker indicate the gender of the words--critical information both for proper use with adjectives and articles as well as pronunciation. Instead, they default to just the masculine version of words like "petit" (final "t" silent) when the feminine version would be "petite" with the final "t" pronounced.

I'd also suggest Audible take a look at the reviews on this book as many of them seem potentially fake. The language used is off-sounding or typo-filled at times, and the reviewers sometimes mention features of the book that simply aren't there. There's no "pronunciation guide," noted by one reviewer, nor are there any of the "stories" mentioned by another.

The only remotely positive thing about this book is that the speaker is fine and clear. I'm an A2-B1 student from the U.S., so I can't comment on his accent.

If you really want a thousand word audio learning tool, buy "French Audio Flash Cards," instead. It also lacks context, but the speaker includes an article like "le, la" for the nouns, so you can get a handle on most of the genders (though it still fails for nouns that use l-apostrophe for the article.)

Not enough info about the words

it would help the learning greatly to be given a little more information about the words, especially spelling tips so as to disambiguate them. The biggest flaw is in not giving word genders and their spelling variations which is huge problem in trying to learn French!

Nice audio book

It was fun listen "French Audible for beginners". Very fresh and systematic approach for making french learning easier and interesting.

I am highly satisfied

The audiobook is easy to understand, simple and clear layout. It helped me to improve my poor vocabulary before having a meeting with French people. The stories are fun to listen and it's much better than just learning from a dictionary. The audiobook can be improved by adding more pictures, to imagine the plot of each story better, but it's not a necessary thing.

Perfect audiobook

This audiobook is a great way to learn French. I have studied French before but I learn best when I am fully immersed in a language. This was a great way to listen stories and learn at the same time. It takes some studying and real thinking about the use of words and the order difference from English. But it is a very good way to perfect your French. I have the Kindle version, but I would suggest getting the paper copy so you can make copies and easily keep tabs on certain vocab you may forget.

Helpful audiobook

This is good practice for learning French. New vocabulary is introduced, and used in an engaging way. I do recommend these audiobooks for your language learning journey!

Completely useless

The vocabulary is provided without any indication of gender - for instance, 'mouth' is simply given as 'bouche'. If you do not know whether this is masculine or feminine, you cannot use the word correctly or with confidence. The same goes for adjectives - you are just given the masculine singular adjective, whereas the adjectives for feminine or plural nouns could be quite different. Another failing is that the vocabulary is presented without any context - you are simply expected to listen a string of words repeated in each 'chapter', without any examples or illustrations of how to use the words. A complete waste of time!

Do not buy this book

The book does not give you the definite articles or the indefinite articles when saying the words. There is absolutely no point learning words without them as everything in french has to agree.
Waste of time.

Not very useful

The book comprises of the voice actor reading the word in French, then English, then French again for every word in the chapter. The gender is not given and the PDF has a few typos so be carful if you plan to use it for revision. For example "Front" is translated to "Front" when it should be "Forehead".

I think this audio book is best used to check your pronunciation but bare in mind that the narrator is American and not French. That might not be an issue though as he pronounces the French clearly. Personally, I think that this was a pointless purcheses and hasn't given me anything that I didn't already have by putting words into google translate and having it read them to me.

Learning nouns without gender seems absurd

Shouldn’t at least the accompanying word list (pdf) contain the gender of each noun? Strange concept of language learning.
