「謎解き女王」
むかし、ある王様に一人のお姫様がいました。ある時のこと、お姫様は王様に向かって言いました。
「お父様、私に謎を解くことを許して下さい。もし私が謎を解いたら、謎をかけた人の首を斬るのです。また、もし私が解けなかったら、私はその方のお嫁になりましょう」
王様がお触れを出すと、すぐに沢山に人がやって来て謎を出しましたが、皆お姫様に解かれて死刑にされてしまいました。
それを聞いて、ある三兄弟の末っ子で、周りから馬鹿呼ばわりされていたイワンは、お姫様に謎を掛けに行くというのですが……

ロシアの民俗学者。ロシア民話研究の第一人者で、「ロシアのグリム兄弟」とも称される。
600以上の民話・伝承を編纂しており、その数は世界で最も多い。1850年代初めからグリムにならってロシアの口承文芸の集大成を志し、ウラジーミル・ダーリやロシア地理学協会の資料などを基に編纂し、1855年から1863年にかけて『ロシア民話集』を刊行した。文学的修飾を加えずに民話の素朴な姿を伝える編集方法は高く評価され、その分類法は今日も用いられている。1865年から1869年にかけては、スラヴ人の自然観についてまとめた『スラヴ人の詩的自然観』を刊行した。アファーナシェフの編纂は民俗研究にとって価値の高いものであり、ニコライ・リムスキー＝コルサコフやイーゴリ・ストラヴィンスキーの芸術作品にも大きな影響を与えている。
