愛情の冷めきった要と美佐子には小学4年の弘がいるが、彼の前ではそんな素振りを見せずに取り繕う二人。
しかし、美佐子は時間が許せば恋人「阿曾」の元へ通い、そんな美佐子を要は公認している。
そんなある日、美佐子の父親から人形浄瑠璃の見物に誘われ、久しぶりに夫婦揃って出掛けていく。
そこで人形の動きに魅せられた要は、同席していた義父の愛人「お久」の動きが人形のようであることから、次第に彼女に惹かれていくのだった。
子どものために離婚に踏み切れないものの、お互いを信頼し合うからこそ続けていける関係性の二人。
静かなようでいて、内面はうねる波のような心情が描かれる本作は、谷崎自身の私生活を反映している。
谷崎潤一郎
1886年(明治19年)東京日本橋で生まれる。家業が傾き、住み込みで書生となり家庭教師をしながら学業に専念。1908年に東京帝国大学国文科に入学。1910年大貫晶川、小泉鉄らと第2次『新思潮』を創刊、『誕生』や『刺青』などを発表。1911年授業料未納のため退学。1915年 石川千代と結婚、1930年離婚。関東大震災後は関西へ移住し『吉野葛』『春琴抄』を発表。
1931年 古川丁未子と結婚、1934年離婚。1935年森田松子と結婚。1959年 右手に麻痺症状が出て、口述筆記にり執筆。1965年79歳で死去。
