甲野藤尾にとって、兄の親友である宗近一は許嫁のような間柄である。宗近は生前の藤尾の父と彼女を嫁にもらう約束をしていたのであった。だが、藤尾は家庭にただ収まってしまうことを受け入れがたく、宗近との結婚にはあまり前向きになれずにいた。むしろ宗近の友人であり、非常に勉強家であるのみならず、芸術家然とした空気を持つ小野清三に心惹かれ、関係を深めるために積極的に彼に接していた。
一方、小野は養い親である井上孤堂の世話になって東京帝国大学まで進み、井上の娘である小夜子と小野は許嫁の間柄だが、たとえ、恩人の娘とはいえ、古風で大人しく後ろからついてくる性格の小夜子に物足りないものを感じていた。小野もまた藤尾に惹かれていたのである。
そんな折に小野の元には井上から手紙が届く。それは井上が娘の小夜子と共に京都から東京に引っ越してくるという内容であり、藤尾を想う小野は憂鬱に苛まれるのであった……
<夏目漱石(なつめ・そうせき)>
日本の小説家、評論家、英文学者。森鴎外と並ぶ明治・大正時代の文豪である。1867年(慶応3)江戸牛込馬場下横町(現在の東京都新宿区喜久井町)に生まれる。本名は夏目金之助。東京帝国大学英文科卒業後、東京高等師範学校、松山中学、熊本第五高等学校などの教師生活を経て、1900年、イギリスに留学。帰国後、第一高等学校、東京帝国大学の講師を務める。1905年、処女作『吾輩は猫である』を発表。翌年『坊っちゃん』『草枕』を発表。1907年、教職を辞し、朝日新聞社に入社。以後、朝日新聞に『虞美人草』『三四郎』『それから』『門』『彼岸過迄』『行人』『こころ』『道草』などを連載するが、1916年(大正5)12月9日、『明暗』の連載途中に胃潰瘍で永眠。享年50歳。
