ひと時は目に見しものをかげろふの
あるかなきかを知らぬはかなき
浮舟の失踪に宇治の人々は動揺し探し回るが行方はわからない。不吉な予感がした母の常陸夫人は宇治を訪れ、残された書置きから浮舟が宇治川に身を投げたことを知る。常陸夫人は、世間に騒がれることを懸念して、亡骸もないまま、すぐに浮舟の葬儀をするのであった。
匂宮は悲しみのあまり病に伏し、薫は落胆しながらも四十九日の法要を盛大に営んだ。
浮舟を失った悲しみを紛らそうと匂宮は新しい恋愛を求めたりしていた。一方、薫はかねて憧れていた女一の宮（にょいちのみや）を垣間見る機会を得て、その高貴な美しさに心を奪われる。異母妹である妻女二の宮にその面影を見ようと試みるが心は慰められない。 愁い深まる薫は宇治の姫君たちのことをはかなく思い出す。
