光源氏 三二歳

みづからはあるかなきかの朝がほと
言ひなす人の忘られぬかな
父宮が亡くなったため、朝顔（あさがお）は斎院を辞し、伯母女五の宮（にょごのみや）と実家で暮らすようになった。光源氏は年老いた女五の宮のお見舞いを口実に朝顔を訪ねる。長年、源氏と手紙のやりとりをしている朝顔だが、他の女たちのようにたやすく源氏になびくことはせず、つねに清い仲でいることを心がけていた。女五の宮は、源氏が朝顔に執心していることを喜び、二人の結婚を期待する。しかし、朝顔は源氏の求婚に応ずることはなかった。
朝顔との噂を心配し、ふさぎこむ紫の上を源氏はなだめ、これまでかかわった女性たちのことを紫の上に語る。
その夜、源氏の夢に藤壺が現れる。二人で犯した罪に苦しみ、恨めしい様子をしている藤壺に、源氏は驚き、救われぬ藤壺の魂を思い、悲しみながら念仏を唱えるのであった。
