小学校で算数を教えている教師の彼は、今にも汽車に轢かれそうな不吉な予感を感じていた。不眠症がこうじた結果、頭が非常に悪くなっていることを実感していた。
学校へ出かける途中に、ふと鉄道線路に行こうと考えた。そして、線路に片足を踏み出しかけた瞬間に、何かに気づいて踏みとどまった。彼は鉄道踏切の中央に佇まっていた本当の理由を思い出した。
彼は、昨年の正月から二月にかけて最愛の妻と一人の子・太郎を追い剥ぎに亡くしたのだ。太郎には、決して線路を歩くなと言い聞かせていたが、彼が線路を歩いていたのを見た太郎は駆け寄ってきた拍子に事故にあった。衝撃的な事故は周りの人間さえも同情するほどだった。
それでも、学校に通った彼の姿を見て、学校の連中は彼の見違えるほどの姿に動揺した。彼は思い出を繰り返しつつ線路際を伝い始めた。
そして、ある日のこと昔から聞こえてきた謎の声に呼びかけられた。果たしてその声の正体とは?悲しい男の救いのない結末とは?
