明治18年初夏、瀬戸内巽は国事犯として徒刑13年の判決を受け、北海道の樺戸集治監に収監された。同房の山本大二郎は、女の話や食い物の話など囚人の欲望を膨らませる、夢のような法螺ばかり吹く男だった。明治19年春、巽は硫黄採掘に従事するため相棒の大二郎とともに道東・標茶の釧路集治監へ移送されることになった。その道中で一行は四月の吹雪に遭遇する。生き延びたのは看守の中田、大二郎、巽の三人だけだった。無数の同胞を葬りながら続いた硫黄山での苦役は二年におよんだ。目を悪くしたこともあり、樺戸に戻ってきてから精彩を欠いていた大二郎は、明治22年1月末、収監されていた屏禁室の火事とともに、姿を消す。明治30年に仮放免となった巽は、大二郎の行方を、再会した看守の中田と探すことになる。山本大二郎は、かつて幼子二人を殺めていた。「なあ兄さん。石炭の山で泣いたら黒い涙が出るのなら、ここの硫黄の山で涙流したら、黄色い涙が出るのかねえ」
