ある日、六兵が派遣されたのは長崎にある島、通称「人面島」。村長の鴇川行平が死亡したため財産の鑑定を行う。島の歴史を聞いた六兵は驚く。ここには今も隠れキリシタンが住み、さらに平戸藩が溜め込んだ財宝が埋蔵されている伝説があるという。
一方、鴇川家にも複雑な事情があった。行平には前妻との間に長男・匠太郎と後妻との間に次男・範次郎がいる。だが二人には過去に女性をめぐる事件があり、今もいがみ合う仲。さらに前妻の父は島民が帰依する神社の宮司、後妻の父は主要産業を統べる漁業組合長である。
