＜あらすじ＞
天保五年正月の正月。薬種屋「むさし屋」の寮が自火で焼け、焼け跡から三人の死体が見つかった。
その身元は下女のおまさが言うには主人の喜兵衛とおかみのおその、そしてその娘のおしのであった。
おまさは、喜兵衛とおしのに同情を寄せる一方で、おそのに対しては、 「おかみさんがあんな死に方をなさったのは天罰だと思います」 と冷ややかな調子で言った。
――喜兵衛の病状が悪化したのは十二月末の夜のことだった。
先が長くないと医者に言われておしのは、喜兵衛の労咳がうつるのを離れ住む母のおそのに来て欲しいと頼んだが、ついにおそのが来ることは無かった。
喜兵衛が危篤に陥った時、彼は最期におそのに一言言ってやりたいことがあると、おそのが住む寮へ行こうとするが、結局その一言を伝えきるまでに息絶えてしまった。
悲しみに暮れるおしのに追い打ちを掛けるように、おそのは衝撃的な事実を伝えた。おしのの本当の父親は喜兵衛ではないのだというのである。
自身に流れているのは汚れた母の血だけ――それを悟ったおしのの心に復讐の炎が燃える……
