が、そのいかめしい外見から一歩中に入ってみると、まことに多彩で魅力ある世界が現れて来ます。
それは或る種の果物に似ています。西瓜(スイカ)の、あの固い緑色の外皮の中には赤くジューシーな果肉が、また荔枝(ライチ)の、あの固いトゲだらけの、茶色の外皮の中には、丸くて白く、甘い果肉が包まれています。
このシリーズは、漢詩のそのような果実をなるべくわかりやすくお伝えするもので、名作の数々を、時代背景や作者の境遇と合わせてお話ししてゆきます。

<第九回 ふたたび江南へ>
杜甫と別れた李白は南へ向かい、長江下流の呉・越の地を訪れます。そこはかつて二十代の半ばに、初めて故郷の蜀を出た直後に赴いたところであり、李白にとって感慨深いものがあったことでしょう。七言絶句「越中覧古」は越(浙江省)の金陵にて、同じく「蘇台覧古」は呉(江蘇省)の姑蘇台にて、ともに春秋時代の「呉越の戦い」に思いをはせて作った懐古詩の名作。
そのころの李白は、最初の妻許氏との間に授かった長女と長男を、東魯(山東省)の或る女性に預けていました。許氏は李白が四十歳のころに亡くなり、南陵の劉氏とも既に別れていたようです。五言古詩「東魯の二稚子に寄す」は金陵滞在中、東魯の子どもたちを思って作ったもの。子を思う父の愛がすなおに表れています。
