あらすじ
ウェンディには二人の弟がいました。ウェンディを含め、もっぱら三人のお世話をしていたのはナナという老犬でした。そうしてお母さんの仕事をよく手伝っていたのです。
ある夜のこと。 お母さんは外から掛け金を外そうとする男の子の人影に気付きます。ですが、姿を見に行くと、人影は消えていました。
また別の夜には、その人影が家の中に入ってきました。お母さんが慌てて声を上げたところでナナがとびかかると、人影はそのまま逃げてしまったものの、そのかげぼうしだけは窓にはさまって切り取られました。
その晩、例の人影が自分のかげぼうしを取り戻しにやってき、とうとう洋服だんすの中にたたまれてしまいこんであるのを見つけました。
ですが、せっかく取り戻したかげぼうしが足にくっつかないので、その人影――一人の男の子はわんわん泣きだしました。その泣き声で目を覚ましたウェンディは、男の子に声を掛けました。これがウェンディと、不思議な少年ピーター・パンとの出会いだったのです。
ウェンディは泣いている男の子(ピーター)をなぐさめ、ピーターのかげぼうしを針と糸でかかとにくっつけてあげました。
ピーターは喜び、いつもウェンディのお母さんがする寝かしつけのお話を聞きに来ていたことをあかしました。
また、自分はネバーランドから来て、ネバーランドには海賊や狼、人魚がいて、面白い場所なんだと話しました。
ウェンディは自分もネバーランドに行きたい、弟のジョンとミケルも連れて行きたいといい、 ピーターとウェンディ、ジョン、ミケルでネバーランドに行くことにしました。
さあ、ネバーランドに向けて出発です!
