I am a fan of anime and really loved Log Horizon and S.A.O. and I was hoping for a similar thing here. There is a very solid premise, being a goblin and becoming entrenched with the NPCs. There is also a good cast of distinct enemies and allies. There is a lot of details that one would expect in a LitRPG novel involving stats, build order, leveling etc. But the story rolls out rather slowly. Maybe this is the norm for LitRPG novels, but I found it was not a very exciting listen.

Some books have parts where the literal text does not transfer well to a listening audience. I think this book has this issue when conveying character statistics. Narrator - " Charisma 3, Strength 3, Endurance 4, Perception 6, Speed 5, Barter 3, Animal Instincts 2, Swimming 4, Hit points - 98, Mana - 45, mana regeneration ..." I think this happened once a chapter. The info needs to be there because it is integral to the complete scope of the book. But,

If this could have been edited down for the narration to " My hit points and mana increased and I chose to apply my character point to Perception bringing it up to 6. This unlocked..." I think it could really help speed up the book. And speed is my main criticism overall.

What disappointed you about Not Alone?

The main character obtains some revealing information... and he is allowed to keep the info, in spite of it being stolen. I could never reconcile that bizarre fact in my head. (Eg: Bill Gates is robbed and the information stolen is allowed to be fully disclosed by the guy that ended up with it... weird)

Also, the main character has challenges with social situations, but then masterfully navigates through some very challenging public speaking events.

Any additional comments?

Still waiting for the book to grab me. The characters are not rich enough for me to feel overly connected with. It is well written, but does not stand out as anything close to amazing. As I listened, I kept thinking that it was not nearly as good as The Name of the Wind.

As far as Fantasy coming of age goes... its alright.

If you’ve listened to books by Connie Willis before, how does this one compare?

Doomsday - awesome, emotional, deadly. To Say Nothing of the Dog - hilarious, romantic, wonderful.

I just wanted this one to end. It should have been 1 book instead of this one and the previous book. There was so much fluff smooshed into dialogue, events etc, totally lost interest and just wanted the end. And that is a huge pet peeve of mine. I feel totally disrespected as a reader and a fan.

Do you think All Clear needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

If it is written better, absolutely. Connie Willis is a great writer and I would love to have the world explored further. I still feel heartbroken (in a "that was well written and I am emotionally bowled over by the interactions of the characters" kinda way) at some of the events in Doomsday.
