Across the ranchlands and cities of his home state, Rory Yates's discipline and law-enforcement skills have carried him far: from local highway patrolman to the honorable rank of Texas Ranger. He arrives in his hometown to find a horrifying crime scene and a scathing accusation: he is named a suspect in the murder of his ex-wife, Anne, a devoted teacher whose only controversial act was ending her marriage to a Ranger. In search of the killer, Yates plunges into the inferno of the most twisted and violent minds he's ever encountered, vowing to never surrender.

I’ve read lots of Patterson novels but he is out of his element here. Although the main character Jesse is a member of an “elite group“ of Texas Rangers, he repeatedly goes rogue beating people up, breaking into houses and totally losing it emotionally. He still manages to cast a spell over every beautiful girl in town. It’s not at all believable.

>Goldy Schulz knows her food is to die for, but she never expects one of her best friends to actually keel over when she's leaving a birthday party Goldy has catered. At first, everyone assumes that all the fun and excitement of the party, not to mention the rich fare, did her in. But what looks like a coronary turns out to be a generous serving of cold-blooded murder. And the clever culprit is just getting cooking. When a colleague - a woman who resembles Goldy - is stabbed, and Goldy is attacked outside her house, it becomes clear that the popular caterer is the main course on a killer menu.

I liked the story but had trouble listening to the narrator. She has a gravelly voice like a long time smoker and it was painful to hear. I plan to go back to reading DMD's books.

The book was pretty good, but not captivating. It was good enough to make me want to listen to the next in the series to see what happens with Jones and Andrea though.
