Danny North knew from early childhood that his family was different - and that he was different from them. While his cousins were learning how to create the things that commoners called fairies, ghosts, golems, trolls, werewolves, and other such miracles that were the heritage of the North family, Danny worried that he would never show a talent, never form an "outself"....

Amazing world, immature character

The worlds that Card has created for this series are extremely interesting to learn about as the story progresses. I love the way he has combined historical mythologies and given it a modern twist.

However, the main character's storyline and dialogue was at times annoying. I felt that the main character was very immature. While I can see that the author was possibly trying to create a more realistic character, as a 24 year old who enjoys young adult literature and absolutely loved Ender's Game, I felt that this character could have showed more promise. Maybe that will start to show up in the books to come, but it was difficult at times to continue listening to all the dumb things he would do.

All that said, the book is definitely worth reading just to get into the worlds that Card has created. While I would prefer to follow another type of character through that world, the main character does have some redeeming values and I will probably continue to read the series to find out how everything unfolds.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Amazingly engaging storyline and the voice actors are spot on with the different ages of the narrator.
