If you liked book one you'll like this one. If you didn't you'll be bored and probably drop the series. If you love magic systems and deductive reasoning this is a great series. If you don't it's not the series for you. The magic system focus is like Sanderson on steroids. The deductive reasoning the same analogy for mystery books.

Thrust into an unknown, unwanted situation, most would feel panic, fear anger, and fall into chaos. Erik and Rugrat are not immune to those feelings, but they have stepped into chaos so many times, it is simply a different challenge. Two weeks ago, Erik lost his legs and his arm. Today he got a message. "You have been randomly selected to join the Ten Realms. One may choose to ascend the Ten Realms, thereupon making a request to the Gods of the Realms. Only those who are Level 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 may ascend to the next realm. Fortune favors the strong!”

Enjoyed this story and will be reading the next one. A lot of "good" authors that get rave reviews are totally over my head, they are all about the mechanics of writing and it all feels a bit like they're wrestling with structure and depth and not just trying to get on with a decent story. This book is the opposite for me (once you get through the first part), it flows to a good pace and has a good story and doesn't concern itself with lengthy, or repetitive descriptions of every aspect of the world.

Eric didn't ask to be a vampire. In fact he didn't even believe in them. Biting your own tongue with your fangs does a lot of convincing. Even so, being a part-time undead isn't as easy as you might think. It can let you hold down a day job, true, but sometimes the night "life" can be more than a little difficult, what with those bloodthirsty urges and predatory instincts kicking in.

I loved books 1 & 2. They were easy to read, full of action. The characters were positive and good. Book 3 starts out good similar style and character traits as 1 and 2, then it just changes. This book just wasn't good. It lost sight of the fun, adventurous aspect that I loved in the first two. Instead, we got a confusing plot, a moody Rezkin, new characters out of left field, near complete abandonment of certain characters (e.g. Frisha), and no progress toward a meaningful resolution the book end abruptly.
