Cassandra Bowden is no stranger to hungover mornings. She's a binge drinker, her job with the airline making it easy to find adventure, and the occasional blackouts seem to be inevitable. She lives with them and the accompanying self-loathing. When she awakes in a Dubai hotel room, she tries to piece the previous night back together, counting the minutes until she has to catch her crew shuttle to the airport. She quietly slides out of bed, careful not to aggravate her already pounding head, and looks at the man she spent the night with.

The story was compelling, the ending a little weak and brief. Sucked me in tho and thoroughly enjoyed it!

I listen to Spanish audiobooks occasionally to keep up my comprehension, and I find that Audible disappoints in its offering of audiobooks in Spanish. I was pleasantly surprised by how engaging this listen was. This tale of a widower in Uruguay, set in the 1950s, is revealed through a series of journal entries. It offers a glimpse of life in a very different place and time than our own, but I found myself able to relate to the character and his struggles.

Adopted by a pair of diehard hippies, restless, marginal Jude Keffy-Horn spends much of his youth getting high with his best friend, Teddy, in their bucolic and deeply numbing Vermont town. But when Teddy dies of an overdose on the last day of 1987, Jude's relationship with drugs and with his parents devolves to new extremes. Sent to live with his pot-dealing father in New York City's East Village, Jude stumbles upon straight edge, an underground youth culture powered by the paradoxical aggression of hardcore punk and a righteous intolerance for drugs, meat, and sex.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I listen to lots of books, and this one never drew me in. The characters didn't come to life, and the ending seemed too tidy. Some of the characters seemed so implausible I couldn't permit the suspension of belief (if I remember the right terminology from high school English) that would have allowed me to enjoy the book.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

Terrible English accent
