When it comes to drumming, Leah Burke is usually on beat - but real life isn't always so rhythmic. She's an anomaly in her friend group: the only child of a young, single mom, and her life is decidedly less privileged. She loves to draw but is too self-conscious to show it. And even though her mom knows she's bisexual, she hasn't mustered the courage to tell her friends - not even her openly gay BFF, Simon. So Leah really doesn't know what to do when her rock-solid friend group starts to fracture in unexpected ways. With prom and college on the horizon, tensions are running high.

I was really looking forward to this book, but it never truly lived up to my expectations. I didn't enjoy the narration at all, finding it lacking in any personality. I thought that Leah would be quirky and against the status quo, in a lovable, endearing way. But she was just not very multi-dimensional, making her fall really flat, in my opinion. All the self doubt and negativity built up for too long to just burst into such a strong turn around, at the end. Just didn't work for me, as well as Simon did.

Pirriwee Public's annual school Trivia Night has ended in a shocking riot. One parent is dead. The school principal is horrified. As police investigate what appears to have been a tragic accident, signs begin to indicate that this devastating death might have been cold-blooded murder. In this thought-provoking novel, number-one New York Times best-selling author Liane Moriarty deftly explores the reality of parenting and playground politics, ex-husbands and ex-wives, and fractured families.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

This book is so relevant, and could be a teaching tool for much more than the tolerance people have for one another, in our world today. This book will help you understand in a way that you could not have before, if this is not the life you have grown up in. The story is performed, not just read. Probably the best narration I've heard on Audible. You will get to know every character, and feel for them, and want to be with them in a way that most book readings fall short of accomplishing. I can only hope the movie does justice to this very special story! Brilliantly written, and beautifully performed!!
