Beautifully written and performed, Salt to the Sea will give a glimpse into the disruptive, destructive results of war on peoples from all backgrounds, especially the children and young adults. The evacuation of over a million German soldiers and civilians fleeing from the Russian armies across East Prussia and Poland, by loading them on boats in the Baltic Sea and transporting them to Germany and Denmark, is a little-known event of the Second World War.

Gosnell is the untold story of America's most prolific serial killer. In 2013, Dr. Kermit Gosnell was convicted of killing four people, including three babies, but is thought to have killed hundreds, perhaps thousands more in a 30-year killing spree. ABC News correspondent Terry Moran described Gosnell as "America's most prolific serial killer".

The authors do a great job of presenting the circumstances surrounding the trial of Kermit Gosnell and its implications for individuals and society. It is interesting to measure the role of law enforcement and media in our country just 5 short years ago, and to see how much has since changed. Abundant food for thought.

On the alien, sunless planet they call Eden, the 532 members of the Family shelter beneath the light and warmth of the Forest's lantern trees. Beyond the Forest lie the mountains of the Snowy Dark and a cold so bitter and a night so profound that no man has ever crossed it. The Oldest among the Family recount legends of a world where light came from the sky, where men and women made boats that could cross the stars. These ships brought us here, the Oldest say - and the Family must only wait for the travelers to return.

But behind the scenes, a complex plot is unfolding, with the destruction of Holden at its core. When Earth intercepts a message from a long-extinct alien race, it seems like the solution humanity has been waiting for. The Undying's advanced technology has the potential to undo environmental damage and turn lives around, and their message leads to the planet Gaia, a treasure trove waiting to be explored. For Jules Addison and his fellow scholars, the discovery of an ancient alien culture offers unprecedented opportunity for study...as long as scavengers like Amelia Radcliffe don't loot everything first.

Another fascinating story from Mira Grant, pitting men against the ravages of nature. I have a new respect for the ocean and its creatures. The human story that evolves in the midst of this conflict is also satisfyingly intimate and accurate, leaving the reader hopeful for mankind, but also wary of its great weaknesses.

Christine Lakin is a master narrator. Every one of the many characters has a distinct voice and personality. What a delight.

On a continent ruled by three empires, some are born with a "witchery", a magical skill that sets them apart from others. In the Witchlands, there are almost as many types of magic as there are ways to get in trouble - as two desperate young women know all too well. Safiya is a Truthwitch, able to discern truth from lie. It's a powerful magic that many would kill to have on their side, especially among the nobility to which Safi was born. So Safi must keep her gift hidden, lest she be used as a pawn in the struggle between empires.
