A serial killer is loose on the streets of Manhattan. His victims appear to be total strangers. The only clue that unites the crimes is the playing card left behind at each scene that hints at the next target. The killer, known in the tabloids as The Dealer, is baiting cops into a deadly and scandalous guessing game that has the city increasingly on edge.

The book has some funny scenes where Leo is breaking the rules for Julie, and many of them brought a smile to my face. There were though, a couple of events that I found hard to believe, but after reading the final twist everything fell into place and made sense

What if Satan kept a journal? This is the premise of The Devil's Diary, which includes 40 entries written by the Evil One as he matches wits with his "adversary", the Son of God. Each daily entry begins with a scripture. The entry that follows will reflect Satan's thoughts and actions based on that passage and other scriptural accounts.

I hurt. I hurt so deeply, I felt the pain searing in my bones and jabbing like a hot poker into my heart. I knew nothing would make it better as the memories pulled from the crevices of my mind, detailing the bad and the ugly, filling my thoughts with regret as I slipped into the darkness...When I was eight, my mother was dying of cancer, my father lost his job, and the bank kicked us out of our house. I was forced to move to the strange town of Arlis, Texas where my father and I slept in our car in the hospital parking lot.

A great debut novel from S.D. Hendrickson. It shows how for better or worse the scars of her childhood impact Alex's decisions as she grows into a young woman. Once you start on this journey with Alex and Jess you won't be able to stop.

When I was four years old, my inept biological parents decided they wanted to summon a demon. They planned to summon one and control him so they could gain riches. However, they didn't realize you can't control a demon, you can only enter into an agreement with them, and so their demon was able to walk out of the summoning circle that they didn't close properly.

As Wendy does her job and tries to find the killer, Culverhouse is less keen. As far as he's concerned, this is justice. I liked the characters, especially Jimmy who was certainly not a perfect character, haunted by the unsolved murder of his father, the event defines Jimmy and the path he is traveling. The murder mystery itself kept me guessing right up until the end, and that is all I’m going to say on the subject.

This is book two of the Hell on Earth series. Legion takes place parallel to events in book one. We see what these smaller, but not less interesting, characters were doing during book one and we see their stories catch up to present. Good follow up in the series
